Show union pacific jacif i 8 c planning line change OMAHA plans for the biggest line change on union pacific since the driving 0 of tits the golden spike 82 years ago were outlined at the railroads headquarters here today the new line 42 miles in length will be constructed between cheyenne and dale creek in southeastern wyoming grading on oil the project will begin immediately with completion expected by the close ot of 1852 1952 the new line will run south of union pacifica double main line track west out ot of cheyenne over foot sherman hill highest point on the U P the new track will carry westbound traffic the present line will continue to be used by eastbound trains purpose ot of the new route Is to eliminate the heavy upward pull out of cheyenne to the summit of sherman hill the present westbound track has a maximum grade of percent as against a maximum grade ot of 82 percent for the proposed line the le i deduction of the percent grade will eliminate the last grade between omaha and ogden which Is in excess of 0 the ruling grade ot of percent will increase the utilization of locomotive power and will effect a considerable economy 1 in n the railroads operations the reduction in grade will also mean a saving ja in locomotive fuel consumed although the proposed westbound route Is nine miles longer than the existing line the train running time will be up to 15 minutes less because of the reduced grade the project also calls calla tor for the installation stal lation of remote control of all junction switches light angle turnouts at all switches and modern color light signals installed and spaced to accommodate ultimate installation stal lation of centralized traffic control |
