Powder Mountain Earth Day is Thursday, April 22. To help celebrate, the Ogden Canyon Club is holding its bi-annual spring Canyon Cleanup on Saturday, April 24. This will be their 14th consecutive year of serving the community by working to keep Ogden Canyon clean. If you are willing to participate in this year’s spring cleanup, meet at the Alaskan Inn at 9:00 a.m. where you will receive mapped instructions and assignments for the cleanup. Everyone’s help is needed. At noon, after the completion of the cleanup effort, there will be an outside BBQ lunch provided at The Oaks restaurant. There will also be a raffle with a chance to win many great prizes. The Canyon Club is asking everyone to come out and help with this year’s cleanup effort. If you can not attend the Canyon Cleanup and would still like to contribute in some way, donations are welcome to help cover the cost of lunch; also, prize donations for the raffle, which are also greatly appreciated. As many may remember, last year we lost a friend and valued member of the community when the Earl family lost their husband and father. With lots of help from individual volunteers and local businesses, Powder Mountain reopened the Sundown Lodge and Lift after the ski season had ended and held the 1st Annual Brett Earl Family Ski Benefit. All proceeds were donated to the Earl family who has been able to stay in their home here in the Valley with us. Runners and families are invited to enjoy the great outdoors and a lively morning at the Ogden Nature Center. Staff will be on hand to introduce live birds of prey and other native animals. Union Grill will cater a scrumptious pancake breakfast with coffee by Grounds For Coffee. Awards, prizes, and kids activities will follow the race on the back lawn of the Nature Center’s Visitor Center. Registration fees are $22 for adults and $14 for children under 12. After May 1, late registration fees are $27 for adults and $16 for kids. T-shirts and goodie bags are guaranteed to those who pre-register, and all participants will be entered to win prize drawings. Flowrider Utah Selected to Host the Wave Loch 2010 Flow Tour National Championship Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition to Host Safe Kids Day Event to Help Families Avoid Preventable Injuries The Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition is helping to prevent accidental death and injury by educating parents and children at the 11th annual Safe Kids Day. The event will take place at the Weber County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall (1000 N. 1200 W. in Ogden.) on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free fair will include educational, but fun, booths and activities. Organizers will give away 200 bicycle helmets, carbon monoxide detectors, and many other great prizes. Ogden Clinic, Intermountain North Ogden Clinic, the Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Safe Communities Coalition, and Utah Safe Communities are sponsoring the event that will teach children how to stay safe. Topics covered during the event include stranger danger, “Spot the Tot,” and sport and bike safety. This year’s Safe Kids Day theme is sports safety. “Safe Kids Day is an important event for families to initiate important safety discussions. It will be a day full of enjoyable activities while learning important life-saving skills,” said Gordon Bradberry, director of marketing at Ogden Clinic. Special guests Princess Amerah, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Star Wars characters will be on site to interact, entertain, and take pictures with attendees. More than 100 local businesses and government agencies will participate with vendor booths. Activities such as a bike rodeo (a clinic that helps teach children the importance of riding a bicycle safely), child I.D. station making kits, a petting farm, bounce slide and obstacle course, face painting, magicians, the reptile show “Scales and Tails,” craft vendors, and more will take place throughout the day. Local policemen, firemen, K-9 units, and emergency response units will be on hand to answer questions and display their vehicles. Guests can explore antique and modern fire trucks, a Life Flight helicopter, and police cars. Helicopter rides will be provided by Whirlybird Helicopters for $35. Admission to the event is free.
