Show m utan statasman Waanaaaay ftovambar 29 1978 Good intentions could backfire In the next three to six years students at USU could be hit harder with tuition increases than students attending the state’s other university the University of Utah The Board of Regents has proposed a comprehensive tuition increase plan that will eventually even up tuition at the U of U and USU Currently tuition at the U of U is $63 a year more than at USU tuition is $11550 more The rationale behind the Regents’ plan is that the education at the two universities is equal In the past the U of U has been considered the more prestigious university in the state by the Regents and therefore it has cost students more to attend that university It is a compliment the Regents have acknowledged USU as equally prestigious and have based the increase on that foundation However USU students could probably end up paying more for higher education than those attending the U of U if the tuition hike is approved The majority of students attending USU have to pay rent while attending school Many students escalating the cost of higher education who attend the U of U are commuters and don't have the additional costs incurred by living away from home The necessary increases already substantially affect students An added increase for the sole purpose of making state universities’ tuitions uniform is unfair for USU students The general tuition increases are necessary to ensure an adequate education but making tuitions uniform could discourage prospective students from attending USU in-sta- Out-of-stat- e Looks like they’re getting ready for another tuition hike! Convocations time format deserves alterations T When Professor R M flare from Oxford University opened the series with the topic of moral conflicts he told us that to solve such conflicts it was best to use the editor have enjoyed the USU Convocations senes so far this year and I feel this program contributes a I significant learning experience and to the quality of information available intuitive to students and community but I also feel that the pnnkers and the audience are shortchanged by the time “tut unposed of one class period of SO minutes I as feel the Convocations time wenat needs Are we scrutiny pvuig the Convocation series an inadequate status of "class" when efiould give this event the same tatus of a night time concert or cultural program? an " as reasoning well powers of the mind and he further rejected the absolute use of one method over another At the point in his lecture when he was about to suggest the specific philosophical thinking tools that he employed to achieve this delicate balance the signal came to him via a slip of paper that someone handed to him from below stage that the time had run out and he must conclude his speech The beautifully concise and well- - CTiowwa Spoken too quickly in the rase of developed lecture he had prepared had suddenly turned into a in- John iJran for he wes used to the White House briefing sessions ol coherent and open-endehalf an hour and he knew that he argument could summarize the official causes VN hen Gemldo River a spoke the and circumstances regarding next week he ignored the time limit Watergate in that amount of lime and even had the courage to lake and still collert full fee without on audience questions Audience conscious guilt I ean also extended questions are supposed to be his speech past the time limit reserved for the Sunburst lounge I suggest the time limit of the following Convocations be extended perhaps immediately the Convocation time two class periods should lie made I noted that his key message of available This may not lie fair or encouraging students to get in- desirable to all students but the volved in some kind of social extra time may be more fair to the students who wish to hear an project beyond personal day existence did not appear in his adequate development of the ideas speech until 60 or more minutes and events presented in Conhad passed He continued more vocation The speakers and events eloquently than ever as students are paid for by the university The made a mass evacuation to go to generous donation of private funds 1 30 classes These people missed make the series possible and I am the whole point of his speech and sure that these private individuals the University again it seemed that the impinging would like to see time contingency was affecting the gets its money a worth and at the 3a me time would like to see the complete development of ideas tete-a-tet- e to-da-y itKral arid may indeed become perhaps a solvable one hail we allowed R J Hare the present his whole k lure Perhaps we could still Warn how to get our moneys worth and m the sa’ne breath become enlightener! to the world outside Car he alley time I krvan Pawl IWWSI Ntne' Cotrt Natguann Chna Notm tartiyesasoi ooniMfta "2®"s" mwm Dan anonu OL M mery Qrtg Hughs lCee— OnCensuai wl Kngto W Ann FvXlong CwswaiwB LmmTmctwm Sum Stag m jan at Aartcrof!
