Veber College Mentor Likes Two-Platoon System Best By MILT MECHAM (Reprinted by permission of the Ogden Standard-Examiner) A wonderful thing about this country is the right of expression; "free speech, free press and free worship," so when I was asked to set down my opinions about the two-platoon system in football, I considered it a privilege to be able to speak out freely my views on the situation. I might start by posing a few questions: 1. What purpose or purposes is football supposed to serve? (a) Is it to win? (b) Is it to make money for the school? (c) Is it to develop those characteristics that we .as coaches claim it develops in the men that play the games? In answer to the above questions let me make the following observations : The United States has become the great nation it is, mainly because we like competition. We like to test our skills, and our knowledge. We enjoy a challenge, and we hold as heroes, the winners, in all walks of life. So it is our nature to want to be a winner, but to me there are more ways of winning than by scoring more points than the opponent. For example a coach has a large squad out for football. All of the men are not of equal ability, but each has in his heart a desire to play, or he wouldn't be out for football. If a player of lesser ability can develop during the season to a point that he will be able to play-in a game just a little, he has satisfied a terrific desire, and gained confidence in himself to be able to do something that will be impossible with the abolishment of the two platoon system. The greater the participation, the greater the satisfaction by that I mean a boy or a man that gets an opportunity to play is satisfied. It makes for a wholesome feeling on a squad in place of petty jealousies of the men that are playing. Another reason given for the abolishment of the Two Platoon System was the added expense in volved. Most items I have read have referred to the added equipment. Actually that is the minor expense the major expenses are: "Scholarships" that are given to the athletes, which I think are completely out of line in the Senior Colleges. If the scholarships available to athletes were controlled there would be no need for the expenses involved in the athletic programs today. Proselyting is completely out of hand I asked several Senior College coaches why they gave scholarships to certain athletes, knowing that fellow would not do him any good. Then answer was "If he is on our campus then my team doesn't have to compete against him." So I can't help but feel that eliminating the platoon system of football will lessen to any degree the proselyting of athletes, consequently, no decrease in expense in that department. Statistics show that the injuries occurring in football occur most when the participant is tired. Surely a man will become more exhausted the longer he plays without a rest, and naturally becomes more susceptible to injury. Under the Platoon System, all players were given an opportunity for rest, cutting down the possibility of injury. The question of being able to identify the players running in and off the field can best be answered by this: I'm sure the parents and j friends of each and every player are able to identify them in a hurry. I personally am looking forward to the day when the rules committee will say a coach will choose a squad of 33 or 44 players and that every man will have to play, unless injured, for at least five minutes in every game. I am a firm believes in giving every man a chance to play. If during the practice week he has given full measure of his talents towards the preparation of his team for the game, he has earned the right to play in that game. i Weber Plays Ricks college Today and Sat. The feud between the fighting Parsons of Westminster and Weber's snarling Wildcats will continue next week on Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will be out for revenge after suffering two defeats at the hands of the Parsons that might very well end Weber's chances of being ICAC basketball champs. Weber was on top of the Northern half of the ICAC last week with two wins over Boise, when the Parsons proved to be a stumbling block as they won the two games 82-68, and 81-75. Friday's game was played here in Ogden and the Preachers just had too much speed to do Weber any good. Weber started strong as Ron Lowder broke the ice with a field goal and a foul shot early in the game. Prokopis of Westminster tied the game with a field goal and a foul shot of his own, but Bob Nish put us back in front, 5-3 with his shooting. As far as Weber fans were concerned the night was over, as Westminster then took the lead and held it the rest of the game. Leading scorer for the game was Prokopis with 19 points. Prokopis, by the way, is the leading scorer of the conference. Ganders, also of Westminster, was the second scorer of the evening with 16 points. Weber's Ron Lowder got 14 tallies, Bob Nish 12, and Larry Peterson 10 to lead the Weber attack. The next night Westminster again hung one on Weber, 81 to 75. This time the Parsons got off to a flying start and Weber was closing, fast at the final gun. Leading scorer of the day was Bob Nish who garnered 22 points. Ron Lowder got 20 tallies, and Larry Peterson hit the hoop for 15. Glanders was leader for Westminster, he got 20, and Wegkamp got 16. Tonight Westminster and Weber will meet for the third time this year on the Wildcat floor. Tomorrow the scene shifts to Salt Lake. These two games promise to have lots of action, and both teams will be fighting until the last second. Earlier this season, Weber split four games with Hill Air Force Base, beat Boise twice, Snow once, and lost to Snow once. Loosli Ranked In Ail-Americans Results of the Junior College All-American football poll conducted by Williamson Features Syndicate, Houston, Texas, were just made known. Weber college has cause to be proud of halfback Gary Loosli, who made honorable mention on the poll. The I. C. A. C. has two Junior College Ail-Americans this year. They are Teverbaugh, end, and Butler, guard; both of Boise. Also making honorable mention were ends Abegta, Carbon; Lane, Westminster; and tackle Bates of Carbon. We also have Williamson's final rating for junior colleges around the country. Williamson has two rating systems. One is based on position in national rating, and the other is based on percentage. Weber came in 112 out of 141 junior i colleges, with a percentage of 48.6. Other ratings in the I. C. A. A. C. are: Boise, number 13, 72.9 per cent; Carb.on, number 98, 52.8 per cent; Westminster, number 102, 50.7 per cent; BAC, number 110, 48.8 per cent; Dixie, number 112, 48.3 per cent, and Snow, number 122, 44.8 per cent. Ricks college was rated with the major universities and colleges. She came in 428 out of 564 with 62.2 per cent. what is this we hear about some of I the girls in the dorm getting "short sheeted? By Ed St. Clair Just because it is the middle of winter, it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be any more football talk. On the contrary, football has been making big headlines the past few days, and it's all because of the new changes in the rules. The so-called "sucker-shift" has been outlawed. This development in the rules resulted from a controversial play in the Notre Dame-University of Southern California game. You will remember that Notre Dame shifted from theT-for-mation into the old Notre Dame box and drew USC offside. The ball wasn't put into play at all, but the play set up the only touchdown of the day as USC lost the game. I think the national rules committee was right in ousting the play. In my opinion it just isn't good sportsmanship. There has been a lot of talk about the banning of thetwo-platoon system. Wildcat coach Milt Mecham is quite sad over the going of double-platoon football. The two-platoon system had its advantages and disadvantages. It certainly brought ruin to several of the smaller colleges. Out here in the West, for example: St. Mary's and the University of San Francisco had to drop football. They played such teams as USC and UCLA, who have tremendous amounts of substitutes to put into a game, and this kept wearing down the strength of the two smaller schools. So, rather than play exhausted men against fresh men throughout the game, the two schools were forced to abandon football. It has been said thattwo-platoon football has increased the number of injuries, but this scribe believes that that is a bunch of nonsense. While it is true that it takes time for a player to warm up, and that if he goes into a game Grid Schedule Set For '53 Weber has a fine football schedule for this year. We will play four home games and five road games in 1953. San Diego Junior college will help us dedicate the new stadium on September 18. On September 25, Weber plays BAC in Cedar City. October 2, the Parsons from Westminster play at Ogden. Utah University frosh are next in Ogden on October 9. Weber takes to the road for the next four weeks, playing at Ricks, Boise, Carbon on October 16, 23, and 30. Oregon Tech plays host to the Wildcats in Klamath Falls on November 7. On November 14, the USAC frosh play here in the final game of the season. This Valentines Low As $49.95 see them at Volleyball Inspires Dramatic Ending With the usual bloody noses, skinned shins, and bruised egos, the female sex on the Weber campus began another year of intra-murals.The red-hot contests that have thus far been played have been jam-packed full of thrills and spills. And if you are skeptical, just ask any wounded spectator. Volleyball came to an end with the following teams standing as listed: LaDianaeda, Chanodo, and Sharmea, tied for first place. Independents second, Otyokwa third, and Iota bringing up the tail. Perhaps the most talked about volleyball event was the contest which took place between L. D. and the Pink Ladies. The undefeated LD-ites met what proved to be their equal and then some in the forms of Pink Ladies. The Ladies came out on the top side of the score, 18-28, tying them for first place with their opponents-and the Chanodo Merry Maids. Other contests to take place during the quarter are foul-pitch, basketball, and squash. Best of luck to all the gals, and may the best win. already under way, he is more likely to be injured; it is the coaches' fault if players do get injured. Why do I make this statement? If a coach would have the brains enough to keep his offensive team exercising while the defensive is playing, and vice-versa, they will go into the game in condition to play without being susceptible to injury, and at the same time each player will be more rested than if he had been playing the whole time. Also, the two-platoon system allowed more boys to play because there are 22 positions instead of the 11 in one-platoon football. It is my belief that changing the ru'es should have been left to the individual conferences rather than a national organization. The larger conferences could very well keep the double team system because of large numbers of players. The smaller conferences could adopt either system they wanted, depending upon the will of the various coaches and the number of players available. But, anyway you look at it, football will continue to be played with, or without, the two platoon system, and it will keep on being the great fall sport across the nation.
