Show Tyrone Powers Power's Antics on Set Delight All but Director By Burdette Jay HOLLYWOOD INS Theres There's good reason for those mischievous lights that dance in Tyrone Powers Power's Powers Power's Powers Power's Pow Pow- ers er's dark eyes Director R. R Ma- Ma moullan discovered that Mamoulian is Power and a big cast at Century- Century Fox Pox through a story of early Los Angeles titled The Californian We watched one scene which had hada hada a surprising aftermath aftermath surprising ing at least for the director The set represented the patio of an old Spanish ranch house Powers Power's home He had been away some some place for several years re returning returning returning re- re turning unexpectedly to find a padre padre padre pa pa- Gene Pallette in consultation consultation consultation consulta consulta- tion with his father My boy was the tender greetIng greetIng greeting greet greet- ing from Pallette as he took Power Pow Pow- er in his arms I am indeed glad to see you Fumbles Hug And I said Power trying to return the embrace of Pallette who is as big around as he is tall am glad to see you Power fumbled with the huge Pallette but couldn't find any anyplace anyplace anyplace place to hold on Suddenly he stepped back and said Padre youre you're in the wrong business You should be a wrestler wres wres- tier My boy resumed Pallette still intent on his lines Unes tell us what us-what what What did you say about a wrestler wrestler wres wres- tier Who indignantly ought to tobe tobe tobe be a wrestler Cut shouted Mamoulian Mr Power formally and coldly from whence did you get that line Une about a wrestler Ad Lib Cut Out Just thought it up returned Power brightly Fits nicely too doesn't it Not in this picture said the director still coldly Please start again This time the take was okeh minus the wrestler line Une and Mamoulian Mamoulian Ma Ma- moulian repaired to another set with his camera crew and Power came over to the sidelines to chat with us Mr Mamoulian smiled the star is a really great director but so easily disturbed And that thoughtfully gives me an idea He explained that Mamoulian's big collapsible canvas camp chair the same kind that all directors use has a dinner bell attached to one arm and that Mamoulian pounds it to call his cast to a set when everything is in place and hes he's ready to shoot The chair was standing near us Power borrowed borrowed borrowed bor bor- rowed a screwdriver from a carpe carpenter carpenter car car- pe penter ter took the bell off the arm of the chair and borrowed a knife and cut the canvas nearly through where It holds the arm to the rest of the chair Chair Collapses Now he said to the carpenter please take Mr Mamoulian's chair to him Hell He'll be all tired out from standing The only thing said the long- long faced carpenter as he started away with his burden worse than C 4 I 4 set I 4 KS' KS 4 4 s 's k I h t A 4 L i w d 4 I I I Iw w 4 1 4 A I Tyrone Power Power Power-He's He's Hes a swell guy to fo everybody but hes he's tough on boss I Tyrone Power on directors is Power ower and Don Ameche c combined The only break Mr Mamoulian has as had on this picture is that Ameche isn't jn n it too i Well you can guess of course what happened Mamoulian sat in inis his is chair instructed the placing of f the cameras and the furniture then hen automatically delivered a healthy blow at where the bell should hould have been with the consequent consequent con- con sequent result that there was no bong ong from the bell and the chair c collapsed The director didn't collapse literally literally lit- lit rally with the chair fortunately but ut he was working up toward a. a nice ice nervous br breakdown when we departed Power was sympathetically cally ally wondering who'd done the deed eed but from the look in Mamoulian's Mamoulian's Mamoulian's Ma Ma- moulian's eyes as he leveled them themon on n the star it was apparent that he e was in very little doubt Some day murmured the carenter carpenter carpenter car- car penter enter some director is going to drop something heavy on Powers Power's head lead Wed We'd all rather work with him im than anyone hes he's such a a swell guy uy to all of us but hes he's tough on n directors I |
