Gal., April 21 John (Handsome Jack); Cudahy, son of the late Michael Cudahy, multimillionaire packer of Chicago,. ended his picturesque and stormy career Wednesday by killing himself with a shotgun while in his palatial Hollywood residence. His body was found .in bed. the g:un braced between his knees. Cudahy has been under the care of Dr. V. B. Herbst, neur ologist specialist, for some time; he his been known to be suffering ' from fits of mental depression. SUFFERED BREAKDOWN. "Cudahy has been suffering from a nervous breakdown for some time," Dr. Herbst said last night. "We have had to watch' him carefully. We did not think that he had been, worrying enough to cause him to contemplate suicide, .however." According to the story told by mem bers of the family, Cudahy went into his bathroom about 10:30 Wednesday morning, and took a Winchester shot . gun which he had been using for trap then shooting and had lefr there. He Cud-returned to his bedroom- Mrs. j she ahy talked to him at that time, unsaid, and he "didn't seem to be usually despondent." At exactly 11:45 a. m. she said, she heard a shot and rushed into the bedroom, where she found he had killed himself. Investigation disclosed that early in the morning Cudahy received a letter from the Northern Trust company of Chicago, stating that "we do not want to carry loan and unless your sister can vouch for the, loan or $10,000 which you ask we find it impossible to grant your request." The lettes was signed by H. O. Edmonds, vice president of the trust company. SISTER W IRES REFUSAL. Telegraphic advices to' this effect had undoubtedly been received by Cudahy several, days, ago, for late last nxght he received a wire from his sister, Miss Clara Cudahy, at Santa Barbara, Cal.. containing the following brief statement: "Sorry, but find it impossible to do what you ask.". It was rumored here that this was but another attempt at suicide, which was thwarted by the quick remedial action of his physi- elansFor more than a score of years, "Handsome Jack" Cudahy and his doings furnished "copy" for the public press. He had a dominant personality which many times broke from control and which brought him many enemies. To his friends he wag a combination of egoism and sentimental-ism- ; his acts caused him finally to be ousted from the Kansas City branch of the Cudahy Packing company and sent to California. His enormous enthusiasm for the material joys of life surrounded him with many friends. WEDS NOTED BEAUTY. In 1899 Jack Cudahy fell in love with and married Edna Cowin, daughter of General John C. Cowin of Omaha. Mrs- - Cudahy, noted for her beauty, went to Kansas City with her husband. There, in the course of ten years, four children, Michael, Edna, Marie and Anne, were born to them; Shortly after his marriage Cudahy resumed the spotlight in the club and of Kansas City.
