Show Signpost Friday, September 26, 1986 11 New things ahead for Weber State volleyball program Dave Allison Sports Editor With an off-season face-lift the Weber State women's volleyball program will literally have a new team in 1986. The Lady Cats underwent an extensive roster change and also found a new home from which to play this season. Nine newcomers were added to the 12 person team. Also, the team will now play in the Dee Event Center as apposed to the Swenson Gym. Only Kim Benesh, Carol Nunn and Teri Oklberry return for WSC coach, Cindy Smoker, from last year's squad for what will be a rebuilding season for the Lady Cats. Benesh, a 5' 11 sophomore, is the only returning starter while Nunn, a 5 '7 junior and Okelberry, a 5'9 sophomore, saw limited duty in 1985. Coach Smoker hadn't planned to revamp her program but could not avoid the situation. "We kind of fell into it, "said Smoker. "We had five seniors graduate and two freshman became homesick and went back home ... and Nikki Nye (a 5'10 junior) left to throw the javelin in Germany." To fill the holes left from the '85 team Weber State recuited four junior college players and five freshmen during the summer. Donning the purple and white FOR RENT Piano for rent. September Bauer, Lora Hessinger, Stacy Mitchell, Kathy Nickel and Amy Ziegler round out the long list of incoming freshman. Henneberger, a 6'0 middle-hitter and Norris, a 5'6 setter, have joined Benesh and Okelberry in the starting line-up. Nickel and Ziegler, a 6'0 outside hitter and 5 '9 setter respectively, will play first team ball. Coach Smoker, in her second season, expects that her team will take its share of lumps this year despite going 18-17 last year. Not only will the Weber women have to overcome a great deal of youth and inexperience, but the in-cohesiveness which usually follows huge roster moves. "I had thought we'd be better right now," said Smoker. "But I'm not very patient with them. I have to keep an eye on myself because I don't know of a coach that doesn't go through a really tough year... I have a tendency to expect more than others do." The WSC coach knows the Lady Cats will be competitive and her players talented, though she doesn't see a great deal of numbers in the win column. "I doubt we'll improve on that (her previous team's 18-17 slate), said Smoker. "Not this year. But down the road 'we will." Although Weber State may not have the best team this year, they'll certainly have one of the best places to play in. Smoker was determined to compete inside the Dee Event Center since she arrived and composed an eight page paper III m LADY CAT Kristie Norris is one of nine new players this season. (Signpostphoto: Jeff Bybee) on how easily the facility could accommodate volleyball. Once the administration read the paper, the team was moved."It adds a little class, "said Smoker. "It's kind of funny, we've really taken it for granted. It's likeWhen did we ever play in Swenson Gym?' In fact, I say to myself, why did we ever play in Swenson Gym?" With a new team and a new arena, Smoker and company are definitely headed in a new direction.
