You undoubtedly call one form cockscomb and probably the other princes feather but both are correctly named celosia, from the Greek word kelos, meaning burned and referring to the brilliant colors of these flowers. The reason for two common names is the vast difference in flower forms. Crested celosias or cockscombs have dense, Jed, velvety crowns. Plumed celosias have feathery, plumelike tips on each branch, Both forms are among the easiest of annuals to grow and most tolerant of hot weather and burning sun. Celosias also are practically free of insect pests or diseases. What more can a gardener ask? Celosia seeds are tiny and should, therefore, be covered no deeper than V inch. More soil on top means poor sprouting. Sow seeds when soil warms wnere the plants are to bloom. Thin when several inches tall to allow sufficient space for plants left to develop. Within 10 to 12 weeks the plants will bloom and continue until frost. Blossoms last well when cut; can also be dried for winter use indoors. Cockscombs than arc more satisfactory plumy types but both may have stems stripped of leaves and be hung upside down to dry in a warm, airy place.
