Inhuman treat' inent of immigrants by railroad com' panics has aroused the wrath of the government authorities, and they have laid down rules which the railroads must obey hereafter. To know whether any railroad Ignores or violates these the government has ordered that inspectors shall accompany trains carrying immigrants. One of the worst cases of neglect occurred recently on one of the principal lines from New York to Chicago. Three conches filled with Immigrants were attached to local freight trains: This caused a delay of from one to ten hours at every division, with the result tliat the foreigners did not reach Chicago until four days after they left Ethopian changing his skin and the other to the shadow moving backward on the dlaL The students were asked to state whence came the quotations to say whether their use in the editorial was correct as conforming to the meaning aa originally intended. "As to the Ethopian, said Dr. Rem sen. a few knew in a general, hazy way that the quotation was from the Bible. Several connected It caguely with the leopard changing its spots. The various theological questions which have caused these differences are to be exhaustively discussed at the present conference. One of these questions is of predestination, which caused a number of the present Independent synods to secede from the general bodies in 1880, when the discussion was at ita height An other point of difference in the synods Is the belief relative to the Roman Catholic church and the pope. One of the synodical bodies believes the pope la the The majority of the Lutherans, however, do not accede to this view. The movement for a closer harmony In the Lutheran church was originated by Rev. M. Bunge, of Arpln, Wls., who Is at present a member of the Wlscon sin synod. Two meetings have already been held, one at Watertown, Wls., and the second at Milwaukee, which were more or less successful.
