They permeate the state and beyond. You cant get away from them. When you go to University Mall in Orem, its a given that youre going to see a bunch of Sanpete folk there. At Christmastime I sometimes have to remind myself Im not in Sanpete when Im at the mall. The mall can be fun for shopping and people watching, but dont plan on escaping from Sanpete by going there. (Note: Calvin and I advocate shopping at home in Sanpete where you can strike competitive deals with the merchants and not be distracted by BYU coeds. I happen to know Calvin buys sox by the box from a Sanpete clothier.) Like I say, Sanpeters are everywhere. I ran into them in Las Vegas over Labor Day weekend. I bumped into flocks of them at Disneyland over Presidents Day holiday a few years ago (Snow College had taken a bus load of folks down unbeknownst to me). Stop into Mesquite to make a "donation" to the Nevada educational system and sure as shootin youll cross paths with one of your church leaders. My wife, Diane, and a couple of the kids went to Connecticut this summer to help her folks prepare for their move to St. George. You guessed it; a Sanpete couple was there attending the same church meeting. A person isnt safe anywhere. Ive been in Europe and chanced upon people from around here. It was the same story at Rubys Inn and Bryce Canyon on the 24th of July. The place seemed to be populated by the French, Germans, Japanese, and, of course, people from around these parts. Scheesh! It makes a person paranoid at times. Doesnt it seem odd that the 16,000 plus people who Slicking up the city In Mt. Pleasant theres a new appreciation for the name "city slickers." While most of us concentrated on being dry and warm last Thursday and Friday, a team of Wasatch 'Academy students wearing appropriate rain gear, ie, boots and slickers (hence the name) and carrying large plastic bags, patrolled city streets and the Pleasant Creek channel picking up trash. We dont mean just a little trash; they detrashed the entire city. "Oh, yeah," you say. "Theyre part of the problem so its natural that they are part of the remedy." To those ba humbuggers we reply, "theres a difference in part of the problem and all of the trash. We would also admonish those who have never defiled a Mt. Pleasant city street or creek channel to "cast the first stone (or styrofoam hamburger container or pop can)." Kids are not the only trashmongers in town. But last week at least Wasatch Academy kids were the only and we commend them. Any of you who witnessed them knee deep in Pleasant Creek scooping out a full years refuse (remember some kids from Pleasant Grove performed the same feat without rain last fall), know they were cold, wet and tired but they persisted. have heard numerous adults complain that Mt. Pleasant looked "trashy" this year. Did any of them offer to remedy the situation (other than the three faithful morning walkers who routinely gather trash along their route)? Did any of our other local youth feel inclined to remove visible Power in Trees by Chesley R. Christensen In an effort to improve the 1 refuse? Trash does not miraculously disappear, nor does it all compost If it is deposited on the ground, it will remain there until someone picks it up. Without our own city slickers we would still be looking at the mess which has accumulated all year. Thank you, kids and school advisors who organized the youth into such efficient workers. Your efforts did not go unnoticed. By the way, to the work crew who was assigned to 900 East on Friday, the horses are both fine. Way to go Wasatch Academy! into useable organic matter. Heath R. The programs goal is to plant a tree for every customer Mt. Pleasant Power serves. The utility will plant close to 1,200 trees at various locations throughout the community, including schools, parks and business districts. "Were proud to participate in this very important program," said Dan Anderson, utility manager. "Trees not only help to beautify our homes and communities, but they are natural air conditioners and energy savers. When customers follow some basic tree planting rules, they can save energy and money on their electric bills." For example, Anderson said customers can reduce their energy use by 50 percent or more by shading the windows and walls of their call this county home can spread themselves so thinly around this planet on any given day? Or, on the other hand, maybe I should stay home some weekend and see what its like around here when all of you are away.... RDA approves executive committee appointments by C. R. Truitt MT. PLEASAN- T- A motion was approved to appoint the Main Street Board executive committee as the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) Advisory Committee during the Sept. 27 Redevelopment Agency meeting. Also, Monte Bono was installed as the replacement for RDA executive director William Way, who was leaving city employment in early October. In another motion, a trust and agency fund was established to handle the Main Street Board funds so those funds wouldnt have to be transferred back and forth between the board and the city in order to pay the Main Street Boards bills. The measure was intended to simplify accounting procedures and tie the Main Street Board into the city audit, and had the approval of Laurel Christensen, RDA executive committee member and Main Street chairperson. Final action was to give the Main Street Committee use of the northwest upstairs office in city hall, for which the only expense would be their daily phone use.
