Show - - ' Exec Council Speaks Principles Of PR By EXEC COUNCIL Concern has been expressed by the ASUU Executive Execu-tive Council that the studentbody is not weU informed on what the Executive Council is doing. This concern has prompted this letter and an increased interest in public relations. Executive Council has become very interested in communications and public relations and how important import-ant this area is and the possibilities for development that are aavilable. Often misunderstandings result because of a lack of communication. Executive Council Coun-cil feels that it must assume the responsibility of setting set-ting up some of the channels of communication. Executive Council, as the elected governing body of the Associated Students of the University of Utah, is composed of a president, five boards with three people on a board, and the Union Board Chairman. The five boards are Finance, Organizations, Public Affairs, Programs, and Student Faculty. Students contribute money to student government and activities, but often don't understand how student government functions, or aren't aware of the services and activities that are available to them. Executive Council hopes that through increased communications students will become more aware of student government. govern-ment. To improve public relations the following items have been planned: 1. Appointment of a public relations representative to the Advertising Council that will be directly responsible re-sponsible for the Executive Council public relations. 2. Release of a weekly summary of matters discussed dis-cussed in Executive Council. 3. The Public Affairs Board serving as a clearinghouse clear-inghouse for all news releases from the Executive Council. 4. Advertising Council representatives that are specifically responsible for communication from two or three key areas and convey information to the Public Pub-lic Affairs Board that can be used for news releases. Public Relations has a formula of P plus R equals PR, with P meaning performance and R meaning reporting. re-porting. Student government feels that it has performed per-formed this year, but has sometimes fallen down in reporting to students about what has been accomplished. accomp-lished. Sometimes students fail in the reporting aspect also, for they fail to tell student government what types of programs or activities they are interested in. Communication Com-munication must be improved in both directions. Student Stu-dent government can only be as meaningful as students make it. |
