Where Mrs. Fisher was visiting with her father adn Appeal to Americans As the eleventh month of Japans avowed attempt to restore order in China begins, it becomes increasingly apparent that the campaign in China is the most vicious type of war in an age where war is peculiarly vicious. Japan's war on China is a war which lacks the courage to call itself war an undeclared war which strikes not at the soldiers in the front-lintrenches, but at the weak and the innocent, the women, the children, the aged. IIow devastating this new kind of war can be is evidenced in cables received by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., national chairman of the United Council for Civilian Relief in China. Member organizations cf the United Council include 4, 000,000 members of Labors Committee for Civilian Relief in China and its womens auxiliary; 2,000,000 clubwomen in the Womens Committee, 1,500 leading physicians in the American Bureau for Medical Aid and the entire membership of China Emergency Relief, including Herbert Hoover and many others. Dispatches from American religious and relief leaders made in China place the number of Chinese destitute by the Japanese war at 50,000,000. The Nipponese war machine has creaed one of the greatest and most tragic mass migrations of history. To make matters even more apjialling, six diseases are now epidemic among homeless Chinese civilians. To relieve their plight, the United Council for Civilian Relief in China is sponsoring Bowl of Rice Parties in 2000 American cities on June 17th. Colonel Roosevelt, in words his father might have uttered, urges Americans everywhere to attend the Bowl of Rice Parties not only in the interests of humanity, but a3 a peaceful and yet concrete method of showing Japan what America thinks of her war of aggression. Fire, Water and Sound Spectacle For New York Worlds Fair 1939 RIGHT OUT OF THE AIR By R. F. SERVICE Cavalcade of America" has won many awards including one from the Women's National Radio Committee. Not a little of the credit for outstanding performances is due Don Voorhees, musical conductor. He has the difficult job of arranging background music for the historical stories and spends many hours of research to Insure perfect blending of music and dramatization. 1 ' 1 u" "7 r C-j-.- William L. Stidger's noontime inspirational talks over a New England network attiacted such a response from l.stencrs that t..e sponsor has extended the network. Dr. Stidger, one of Boctc. s prominent clergymen, is now heard over e the network Mondays through Fridays. NBC-Blu- . i vt'f9(y Russ Morgan, above, "Johnny Presents, will soon complete 75 consecutive weeks on the program. Inasmuch as the series Is heard twice weekly, the run Is even more impressive. The reason for Morgan's continued popularity is that he will spend hours over a few bars of music to get the necessary effects which his arrangements call for. ! An artists sketch of the inferno of water, tire, rotor, sound and fireworks to be produced nightly over Meadow lake in the Amusement Zone of the $130,000,000 New York World's Fair 1939. The impossible, it is announced, has been achieved with the perfection of water nozzles and gas burners that will permit of fountain jets and flames 130 feet high. The production will be presented from unique barges already under construction. Hundreds of water nozzles, each backed by the pumping capacity f a modern fire engine, and almost as many gas burners, up to diameter, will be mounted on their respective barges, as will ound equipment and fireworks receptacles. The spectacle is described at Fair headquarters as involving tomorrow's practical application of science in the nearest approach to chaos that man can contrive for purposes of entertainment. A more formal event, equally as mystifwng and beautiful, will be presented over the agoon in the fair's SbO.OOO.OOO Central Mall.
