Virginia Vir-ginia City Enterprise. j In a recent issue of the St, Louis Globe Democrat we find the following: follow-ing: "By going to a silver basis the United States would find itself associated as-sociated with China, India, Japan, Straits settlements, Persia, Mexico, Central America, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. The list is not very long or imposing nor inviting. In fact, the idea of getting Uncle Sam into such company is a painful evidence of degeneracy." Well, suppose it did, would we not be associating ourselves with three-fourths three-fourths of the population of the earth? And would we be any worse off either financially or commercially or morally mor-ally to be associated with the countries coun-tries named in the above extract than with Egypt and Italy and Spain and Turkey and Bulgaria and Brazil and Ashantee and Abyssinia, which are all now on gold basis? Certainly the adoption of a silver basis in this country would not change the character char-acter of the American people. They would still lead all the world in intelligence, in-telligence, enterprise, invention and all that goes to make humanity progressive pro-gressive and prosperous. We were |
