The tiny village of Medjugorje, reportedly through the Blessed Virgin Mary, is sending out the message that peace in the world is obtainable if mankind will reconcile with God and with one another through prayer. In June 1981 six young people from the village testified of an encounter with the Blessed Vicka Mirjana Dragicevic Virgin. The visionaries: Ivanka lvankovic (D O B. Jakov Colo Ivan Dragicevic Ivankovic Marija Pavlovic claim almost daily communication which will continue until ten secrets have been imparted to each of them. Some of the secrets have to do with the world, some with their local parish, and some with the Catholic Church. After they all receive the tenth secret, the apparitions will cease and revelation of the secrets will begin. According to the legend, ten days before the first secret is to take place, Mirjana will tell it to Fr. Peter, assistant pastor of St. James Church in Medjugorje. He will fast and pray for seven days before announcing it to the world on the third day prior to the event. The first two secrets will be revealed in this manner. $ The third secret will be a visible sign. Marie and Eddie, both Milford residents, visited the site earlier this year "There was nothing but peace and love. There was beauty everywhere. Occasionally we could hear the "pop pop" of guns over the singing of the birds, but it didn't disturb the peaceful feeling," Marie said. Although the village is about 100 kilometers from the fighting by road, it is only 8 to 10 air miles I across a mountain range to the heart of the conflict.' The visionaries were persecuted by communist police, threatened and taken away at night for interrogation. Their parents were threatened with confiscation of their passports, and that their work and homes would be taken away. Fr. Jozo Zovko, OFM, a parish priest who helped the children, was sentenced to prison; a type of prison designed to prevent any person from returning in a normal mental or physical state. The visionaries and believers followed the admonition of "Our Lady" and continued to pray. For the time being the persecution has been Due outside to the suspended. pressures, priest was released. The children, after examination by communist government doctors, were declared sane and healthy. The Medjugorje experience has been labeled by local government as religious, and therefore harmless, instead of political. Since the majority of the pilgrims are tunneled through Split, a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, it is even viewed an economic advantage. A movie about Medjugorje, "GOSPA " (meaning Blessed Mother) has recently been released. Whether fact or myth, the "Miracle of Medjugorje" has created one spot of peace and safety in the midst of unspeakable human atrocity. Is "enforcing peace" actually a contradictory term? Webster defines peace as freedom from war or civil strife, and enforce as to give force or compel. Should American troops be sent in to enforce the peace agreement? At this stage, roads within the city are being torn up and this is causing some concerns about dust control. With winter on the way, the dust problem will soon diminish but this in turn will bring up problems with mud. We will try our best to keep the residents notified as to the area the contractors will be working in. We also ask that you please drive at a slower speed in these areas so as to help alleviate these problems. This project is going to be great when completed and WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTER!!! The City of Milford : the Paths to Peace."
