It makes no difference whether we have fitted ourselves to the earth through a long' series of evolution or whether it was fitted to us; as far as we know it is the only habitable spot in the universe and the chances are almost infinite that no other Is so favorably located. Let us make the most we can of it of the lakes bays. Clocks for tho Doof, One of the interesting items of the state expense charges for July, says the SL Paul Globe, appears in the current lists of the state school for the deaf at Faribault It Is an item, of 1252 for s dock, which la remarkable la more elements than In tbat of its expensive character. But this mechanism is certainly a wonder, for it Is so arranged that it calls the pupils attention hourly to the sehool program and the calendar, in spite of the fact that they are all deaf and the usual alarms do not affect them In the least Of course one clock would not be visible to all the pupils, so there are ten dials, secondary clocks, with which tell the teachers and scholars who cannot see the main clock what class in mathematics is now due up fractions on its fingers, or when the scholars in English grammar will write their lesson leaflets. The secondary clocks are Included In the h original Item of $252, as are the utility of which in a school for the deaf has aroused the curiosity of some of the state departments, which fear that the precedent thus established may result In the establishment of the purchase of and Bouguereaus for the dormitory in the school for the blind, and standard works on the Integral calculus in the Sooth African Snake Story. There is more than one way of fightA ing a snake. In Natal, South Africa, where lives the deadly mamba serpent. a party of fifty or sixty Kaffirs were building a road. In the course of their work they came to a huge stone, under which dwelt a large black mamba, well known to the neighboring inhabitants as being very fierce and ;venomous. The superintendent anticipated trouble with the rock and so he offered a reward to the Kaffir that would bring him the snake's skin. For :a time none of them dared make the attack, but a slim youth finally sauntered forward, and amid the Jeers and protestations of the rest declared himself equal to the task. lie took from his neck what looked like a bit of shriveled stick, chewed it, swallowed pme of it, spat out the rest on his hands, and proceeded to rub his glistening brown body and limbs all over. Then, taking up his stick, and chanting a song of defiance, he advanced with great confidence and swagger to the boulder. There he roused up the mamba, who in great fury at being disturbed bit him in the lip with great venom. The boy took no notice of the bite, but broke the snakes back with his stick and bringing him to his master asked for the reward, obtaining which he went back to his work, and the bite of the reptile had no effect on him whatever. No bribe, not even that of a cow (better than any gold in the eyes of a Kaffir), would Induce this native to disclose the secret of his antidote, which, he said, had been handed down in his family for generations. The snake was a very long one, and so old that it had a mane. It Is a fact that certain of the Zulus have antidotes for the more deadly snake poisons, which they preserve as a secret within their own families. 12-ln- ch five-inc- fire-gong- s, Mela-sonie- ra Sharper Urals s Conitncton on one of my early trips aid the conductor. "A well dressed man got on my car and when I went to him for his fare he handed me a $5 bill. I took the hill and examined it pretty close, as I always do with big bills. I didn't have any too much change, so I held the bill in my hand and said, Havent you anything smaller? Tbe man said, 'I don't think so,' but he took the bill and crumpled it up in bis band while he searched through his pockets for smaller money. Then he shook his head and banded back the crumpled bill. I didn't look at it again, but stuck it in my pocket and counted out $4.95 change. Weil, when I counted my money at the end of the run I found myself Just $4 short. Then I tumbled to the game. The sharper had cleverly changed tbe $1 for a $1 while he was looking through his pockets and I simply bit like a sucker. But, say, you can bet I won't bite again." From the Boston Journal: The superstition that thirteen is unlucky, which Is traced back to a sacred source, meets with as many contradictions as confirmations. The fact that the horrible fire In the Paris bazaar started at booth thirteen was telegraphed all around tho world, whereas little notice la attracted by Nansen's success with thirteen men. At one time two was a dreaded number in England, owing to the dynastle disasters to all monarchs second of their name from Ethelred II. to George II. Vet Napoleon's number through his life was two, and who could wish Tor better luck thar came to Goody Two Shoes, or than that which results at times from having two strings to your bow? Three, which since the days of Pythagoras has. been the divine number, shows that It Is not Invariably fortunate, for, though the fates are three, so also are the furies. The graces are three, but so also are the Judges In hades and the beads of Cerberus. Then there are the records of three disloyal tribes In Welsh history; there sre the three robbers In Orion's belt; there were the three tyrants at Athens, and three In mythology Is as unlucky as It Is divine. Just so clearly as It has been shown In time that the unlucky two can lie lucky and that the pleasant three can be unpleasant, the followers of (he late Capt. Fowler would show that the unlucky thirteen ran be the luckiest nub-bthere Is. Recently the wife of W. J. Paxton, residing a few miles east of West Union, Ohio, while feeding a hen and faer brood of chickens, dropped the diamond set in a finger ring. No sooner had the diamond struck the ground than it was gobbled up and swallowed by the hen. At first it was decided to kill the hen and recover the precious stone, but after a consultation with her husband It was decided to wslt a few days, so as not to deprive the chickens of the needed care of their mother. Several of the neighbors were told of the strange occurrence. and It waa soon the talk of the neighborhood. In the meantime the farmer's wife had grown Impatient for the recovery of the diamond and had determined to kill the hen In a day or two, but that opportunity has now passed. It was discovered that the hen was misusing, and a thorough search of the premises failed to reveal any trace HOW THE FEAT WAS ACCOM of the missing fowl. When the kitten was weaned he showed no tendency to abandon the dogs life which he had learned to lead and began to exhibit all the Banins characteristics which he bad nursed with his adopted mothers milk. Instead of mewing and caterwauling like a melancholy orphan cat he began to bark like the other puppies, and growl like they did, and he became the wonder of the friends and visitors at tha Maddox home. He was named "Towser and responds to the whistle of hla master like a sure enough dog. Perhaps the oddest trick Towser has learned is that of wagging his tall, which ha does, not In the serpentine manner of his ancestors, but from side to side. In the vigorous and uncompromising style of a dog. Towser expresses fear, too, as he has seen his foster brethren do, and runs to cover. During the hot weather Towser suffered considerably from the heat and might have been seen sitting about In the shade, panting with his tongue out, In the manner supposed to be peculiar to the dog. He has none of the sinister traits of his tribe, does not parade along the narrow edge of back fences in the dead of night, and gets from place to place In a dog trot or a real gallop Instead of in the and obsequious manner of other cats. Towser has masterof ed that mysterious dogs which bas been the wonder ol naturalists for all time, and seems to bave but little trouble In forming tha acquaintance of strange dogs which he meets on tbe street corners and about and the bases of friendly lamp-postelegraph poles. Occasionally he has run across an ugly terrier, which, accepting no overtures, would attempt to rend Towser on tbe spot, and It is only on such rare occasions that Towsers feline propensities come to the surface. When a dog attacks him he will climb a tree or a fence, where he will sit growling and barking at the enemy until he satisfies him that he Is not really a cat, but a dog In all but physical conformation. Towser Is very fond of a run through the streets with his master, and from long jaunts over the granitoid pavements and rpugh streets his once velvet paws have bon covered with corns until his footfall Is no longer Inaudible, and his are as rough and strong as those of a dog. Towser has a pronounced antipathy for women, and will rush at them, barking furiously and growling as If hs would bite them; his bark is worse than his bite, however, for he has never been known to bite any one and has earned for himself the reputation of being a very docile and intelligent dog, or cat. as the case may be. ral-lo- .....CASCAKXTS I norm.
