Show VANDALISM. One of the most inexcusable and dastardly acts of which we have heard for some time past was committed in Logan one night last week. On Wednesday, the 22d inst., the family of Mr. Justin Merrill closed their residence-which is situated on Logan Island; carefully locked the doors and departed to Smithfield, where they remained all night. Returning on Thursday, they found that the house had been entered, and a fine, new carpet torn up from the parlor floor and carried away. The furniture was displaced and straw scattered about the rooms; but no other material damage was done. The carpet had been but recently laid down, being very securely tacked. In removing it the house-breakers did not take the pains to lift the fastenings, but tore it up as if in haste. Diligent inquiry was made but without result, until Friday morning, when the carpet was found rolled up in the manger of Mr. Merrill's stable. Whether it had been first hidden there, or returned after the search commenced is not known. The object of the guilty parties evidently was merely to injure Merrill, and not to benefit themselves. A suspicion is entertained, and as Sheriff Crockett has the case in hand we may expect to have the scoundrels brought to justice. We hope they will be caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law. No legal measure can be too harsh to be used toward them. |
