Show TIPPLING TRICKSTERS. Recently some men came into Cache County from Wyoming to buy cattle. While out at a settlement not far from Logan they felt a strong desire for a draught of something which would both cheer and inebriate. No ardent spirits were sold in the town; but after cautious inquiry, they learned of a man who was supposed to keep liquor for his own private use. A plan was soon conceived which gave every promise of success. One of the leading men of the village was very ill; so they wrote a note, to which they signed his name, asking the man who kept the private demijohn to send a bottle to prevent any suspicion, the rascals secured the services of the sick man's son-a boy about thirteen years of age; and he went, presented the note, and as a result brought out not only a bottle of whisky, but also a bottle of wine. The men, who were awaiting anxiously, took the liquor, for which of course they paid nothing, and very gladly they gave the boy a dollar and a half for his trouble. Forgery is a serious offence in this Territory, and the officers of the law should take cognizance of the affair. |
