Show A SERIOUS EVIL. We are informed by a responsible party of an evil which sadly needs correction. It seems that the children attending some of the schools of this city take delight in giving annoyance to those people whose property adjoins their play grounds. The case which has been called to our attention is a more serious one than those productive of mere annoyance, as it involves theft. A gentleman, whose property is situated in close proximity to a certain schoolhouse lot, raised this season about 100 heads of cabbage. Out of this whole number he has had but very few for the use of his family; and the remainder have been conveyed from his premises, taken to the play ground and cut up. The children probably were acting thoughtlessly; but that is only a poor excuse. They should be taught better even if harshness becomes necessary. Parents ought always to inculcate in their childrens' minds such principles as will make dishonesty impossible; and teachers should guard particularly against the commission of any such acts by their pupils. |
