Show December 1,2010 rfe rTIMPANOGOS-IME- S : . 5 - - ii- - Family is Welcome in the Classrooms at Lindon Elementary 'V Students at Lindon Elemen-tary celebrated Grandparents Day on Tuesday, November 23. Grandparents Day is a co-ordinated event. The teachers come up with an activity for their students to do with their grandparents. Principal Theeler said, "We couldn't do it with-out our PEA because they are in front helping grandmas and grandpas know where to go. They help get the word out to the community and they pro-vide treats after the activity. Like most things here at Lindon Elementary, our PTA is fantastic and knee deep in helping good things become better and good things become great." Principal Theeler is in-volved with Grandparents Day. "I love it," he said. "It is wonderful to walk the halls in the morning. I go into every classroom and take pictures. It is great to see the kids nestled with their grandparents. It's fun to see so many people come. We are pleased with the amount of support we receive." Cheti Hardman, a PTA member, said she started the event four years ago when she was FLA president. "I wanted to get parent involvement and have family feel like they are welcome in the classrooms and create that relationship." Cheri loves Grandparents Day. "I think it has grown. Parents and grandparents are talking about it. As they leave they are just so excited and thanking us for hav-ing them come. The teachers are enjoying creating their own ac-tivities. It's fun," she added. Melissa Becerra, a Kindergart- - ner, made a gingerbread house with her grandparents, Emma and Keith Dexter. Emma and Keith are Melissa's adopted grandparents. Keith said, "I think it is absolutely fantastic." Coen Chadwick, a first grader, invited his grandpa, Bruce Chadwick, to come with him. Coen made a booklet about his grandpa which helped him get to know him. He learned his grandpa is fun. Grandpa Bruce said, "It's fun. It's great to see these kids develop." Christopher Eyring, a second grader, stated that the thing he loves most about his grandma, Mary Lou Broad-hea- d, is she helps him with his projects. Mary Lou came all the way down from Kaysville so she could spend one on one time with Christopher. "I have been really impressed with this school and what the teachers do and the administration. It's great to be here," she said. Third grader Anna Johnson made a count down to Christ-mas chain with her grandma, Karen Beardall. Karen moved to Utah so she and her husband could be here for these types of things. "I'm just totally sat-isfied, fulfilled, happy. This is what life is about," she said. Kesli Johnson, a fifth grad-er, asked her grandma, Kelly Chalmers, questions with her questionnaire and on the back of the questionnaire Kelly wrote a letter to her granddaughter. Kesli loves her grandma's cara-mels. "I love to be with Kesli," stated Grandma Kelly. "She al-ways has a smile on her face. It is fun to see where she goes to Kindergarten students nestled with their grandparents at Lindon Elementa- - ' ry. Many people came and supported the event and thefaculty was pleased with the amount of support the program received. Photo courtesy of Timpiinogos Times school and her teacher and her room." Grandma Kelly partici-pated with four grandchildren at the school . Nathan Winters, a sixth grader, calls his grandma "Lila", which in Spanish means little grandma, and grandpa "Boom pah" because that is what his older sister called them. Nathan shared how he felt about his grandparents, Bill and Carol Gould. "I am happy they could come. They are re-ally nice and I love them." Nathan asked his grandparents and parents about their child-hood and Nathan answered the same questions. The activity al-lowed students to compare the changes across the generations. Nathan learned that his grand-parents aren't after all, just normal. Grandma Carol said, "We just love him. ' He is just awesome." Granpa Bill slated, "Nathan is obvious-ly the brightest kid in the class and he's actually the brightest kid in the United States and so it is alway s a joy to be with him." The activity was enjoyed by all, strengthened family'ties, and left everyone w ith a good feeling. Pleasant Grove High and Junior High School Calendars Wednesday. Hmura is working on their newest specially burger reminiscent of home. The "Boston Burger" features ' cheddar cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions and a slice of pastrami. State Street Grill is located at 2000 West and State Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah. The Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce welcomed the newest restaurant to Pleasant Grove City in a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday. City Council member Val Danklef and owner Greg Hmura cut the ribbon and officially opened the grill amongst Chamber members, city and grill employees. "We are thankful you have invested in our city," said Val Danklef in his welcoming remarks. "We will do all we can to steer people your way." Owner Greg Hmura isn't your ty pical restaurant owner. In fact, he has no experience in the industry but felt that Utah County needed a high-en- d, fast food restaurant that solely used fresh ingredients. "I was inspired to start a restaurant," said Hmura. "I was out of work and thought it was an opportunity to be gainfully employed." Massachusetts native Hmura, a previous teacher, was searching for work when he came across the building that houses State Street Grill. After negotiations, he started renovations and restored the building to resemble a nostalgic 1950's gas station. He relied on recipes from other restaurant owners and developed a menu that was both time-teste- d and simple. Slate Street Grill uses only fresh ingredients. Burgers are made with generous portions of fresh ground chuck. Fries and onion rings are hand cut and fried to perfection. All shakes are made with real, hard ice cream. "Our shakes are meant to drink through a straw. You don't get those here in Utah," said Hmura. Fast forward one year and the only mention of the Jay-ce- es was their club Christmas party and how they arranged for Santa to visit the elemen-tary school (Central) and any shut-i- n children in town. If you don't mention it, maybe it didn't happen? Back to 1953 and a perus-al of events indicated several individual parties, hosted by prominent citizens, were held the same night as the gala event but no one seems to remember what was to become a great city tradition. In fact, no one seems to remember the Jaycees or what happened to their club. (And I've asked people who would know!). To their credit, Pleasant Grove City has instituted oth-er holiday traditions that had staying power and are enjoyed by old and new citizens alike. There's a comfort in knowing you can plan on an event and even build your own tradition around it and the Tree Lighting is one that continues to grow in popularity and attendance. Whatever your holiday tra-ditions, make them memorable and record them so poslerity can follow in those wise and familiar footsteps.
