Probably few Utahns are aware that Continental Oil Co., now headquartered in Stamford, Conn., and I6th largest imdastrial corporation in the US., had a humble beginning in Ogden in 1875. I DESERET NEWS, FRIDAY, JULY 25 , 1975 I Continental, beet known for its petroleum products marketed under the Conoco brand name, is the eighth largest U.S. oil firm, according to the Fortune Magazine list of the 500 largest industrial corporations in the country. Its sales last year totaled over seven million dollars and assets are listed at $4.6 million, Total employes number 41,174. I Still, the company hasn't forgotten its inauspicious start in an area far from any known oil fields of the time. In September. Continental officials will travel from Stamford to Ogden, for a special observance of the company's 100th anniversary and to honor Isaac E. Blake, an obscure peddler of coal oil, candles, grease., lard and paint. Under the pretentious name, Continental Oil and Transportation Co., Blake sold his vares from a horse-draw- n wagon which meandered up and down the dusty or muddy, depending on the weather streets of early-da- y Ogden, according to tradltio.i. If the fledgling firm did, indeed, start on such a small scale, it quickly developed more ambitious operations. In 1876, Continental opened an agency in Deaver, Colo., and a year later, it was operating in California, By 1878, the ambitious Blake was opening refineries in San Francisco and Los Angeles. and was iliafketing Friaav's quotations CITY KANSAS thiS week, Quotabons for Trading write& Earlier ib slaughter !b mostly choice (AM- 100.
