It's the Stundents That Count Dear Alumni, Much to my sorrow, we have no beautiful new buildings to show you upon your return home this year. Neither can we invite you to a four year college as I had hoped. But we lack in physical facilities, which will come, we make up in friendliness, unity of purpose, school spirit, work, and personal worth. When you went to Weber, it was not the buildings, the campus or the equipment, but the quality of the people that made' your soul burn within you. It is the human element not the materials that makes up the spirit of Weber. Upon your return you will find the same friendliness, unity and love of high ideals which were here when you went to school. Whenever our students leave home to represent the school I always receive letters of praise. The following letter is typical: "Dear Mr. Dixon: ' "The Weber College band, under the chaperonage of Mr. Delmar Dickson, and the Whip Club, under Mrs. Marva H Gregory and Miss Gertrude Stallings, have just spent two days at the Linkershim Hotel. "I cannot refrain from writing to say what an outstanding group these young people are. At times my faith in America and its younger generation is rather shaky, but after these two days with group such as these, I know we are safe. "No smoking, drinking or rowdyism respect for elders and general deportment at all times was an inspiration, I can assure you. Mr. Dickson, Mrs. Gregory and Miss Stallings were very cooperative and understanding at all times. "My respects to you, Sir, as President of Weber College, for your part in presenting such an outstanding group. It will be our pleasure to again welcome any of your group at the Lankershim Hotel, when visiting Los Angeles. Very truly yours, Allen J. Pederson Resident Manager The Hotel Lankershim" I expect a spirited , warm homecoming Armistice Day. We have had splendid alumni and student leadership this year. We all welcome you back home. Dear Editor, Doubtless many people are interested in the proposed change from the present mayor-council type of city government to the city manager type, for Ogden city. Therefore, I should like to present to those who are interested, the following information which was obtained from Mr. Pat Healy, and Mr. Dave Robinson. It compares with the administrative organization employed in private business, and has been proven economically successful. For a city of this size, there would probably be about seven members in the cfty council, who would be elected by the populace. Their duties would be to hire a city manager, establish matters of. policy, approve a budget, and to check up on, and to pass on to the city manager the complaints or petitions of the people whom they hear at their regular meetings. Only those who have the desire for good clean city government would be apt to try. It is agreed that corruption could introduce itself into this form of government, by having the council induce the city manager to do its bidding by the threat of firing him. This however would be directly assignable to them and the cure is in the hands of the individual voters. That is the beauty of a plan like this, the responsibility for the efficient operation of the various departments lies directly in the hands of the city manager, and we the people do not have to wait for another two years to get rid of the guy who drags his feet. Should a commission be elected to frame a charter"? That is the question that you will be called upon to decide. If your vote is, "yes", then you will select 15 of the listed names for members to the charter commission whose sole authority will be to draw up a charter for Ogden city. That charter will be approved or rejected at a subsequent election. If it is approved then you will be asked to vote again on a number of councilmen who will hire the city manager Then, and only then will the present orm of city government be changed. Nov. 8 will be the beginning or not, as you decide. It's your city, and the choice belongs to you. Charles E. Pomeroy Who's A Prunepicker? My curiosity is aroused at the bonebrains who have been jockeying our football opponents Some of the slurring remarks overheard: "Give him another dose of 'Mary J' and send him in again, coach" "Hey, prunepicker, who told you how to play football?" That stuff might have been great in grade school as it would have immediately classified you as a school wit. Here it classifies you as a flannel-mouth. That's pretty low sportsmanship and a bad reflection on the college. I made a sickly attempt at doing so the other day and when the dust cleared away from the leap I was forced to make in order to keep from being flattened, I observe four articles upon the sidewalk which had not been recorded in the city inventory. Mainly, two portions of a pair of trousers from around the knees I would say , and two peachy looking specimens of epidermis about the size of Bonner's right and left palm. Maybe they should station a boy scout out here to help us aging students across. Musical note to pedestrians: B sharp or B flat. ' Nine hundred stouthearted vets stayed in the confinements of their humble abodes on the hallowed night of the Vet club's first social. This was of great aid to the success of the party, and contributed no little to the whopping flop enjoyed by , the ten eager veterans who managed to bridge the distance to the Legion hall. Diplomacy without the ham acting could be carried on for half the dough, and in big-time labor relations we dare say the saving would be even more substantial.
