money from those areas into other funds "We evaluate how much use there is in each department and make sure that we touch base with the majority of students" -- bj Gail staff writer done on campain Thurber said What do college students read — when they don't have to read1 "Science fiction and fantasy-arour best sellers" said Marion Denton buyer and manager of the trade (nontext section of the USU bookstore “Popular psychology children’s books and cookbooks also do well” Books dealing with sports humor poetry and the occult tend to sit on the shelves according to Mrs Denton “The fact that we don’t sell occult surprises our book representatives” she said “On most other college campuses they do very well” But the USU reading public is a different buying market in other ways too “We follow the best seller Mrs Denlist for ton said “But when it comes to fiction USU buyers are ) For students here sci-- ri and fantasy are best sellers by Sue Van Alfen Information Services non-fictio- unpredictable” V The bookstore trade section stocks as many new titles as it has space for (about 10000 in all) to give campus bibliophiles a variety to choose from “Sometimes we hit and sometimes we miss on a back They know there is a squeeze on" He also said Carr has been more fiscally astute than any other officer he has known the success of this program is one of his biggest hopes Image Another area in which was that of improving the national image of USU and keeping a “thumb on campus academic policies” Myers said if the students at USU are successful and the programs are successful “then it becomes a reputation thing but it is a long-ter- d Residency Laws Residency laws have been a concern to many students and this was an issue of Carr’s campaign He met with Evan Sorenson assistant director admissions and records to get an understanding of the residency situation and he submitted a resolution to the Utah Intercollegiate Assembly concerning the residency laws and how they need to be changed The U1A is a mock legislature where representatives of all the Utah universities and colleges get together Carr suggested that the admissions officers of each the Utah schools of higher learning get together and clarify the law and try and reach some kind of equitable program "This is an institutional problem and does require an administrative change” Myers said Summer jobs m process” He said the officers and the ASUSU leadership program are adding to the overall general reputation of USU Carr said he visits often with the departments and deans and brings the topic of USU’s image up "I ask them what their college is doing toward excellence in this field and teaching our people to he leaders and to be better than average” He said he was concerned about grades and how they may or may not hurt students “AH these things go hand in hand with the very fact that the essence and idea of being here is to purchase a diploma and for it to be valuable" he said Ken said he is promoting an internship program that might take a couple of years to get underway “Student Services is one of the biggest things I'm concerned wtih" he said The internship program he is working on he said is one where students can get summer jobs or work during any quarter in their field of study to get some practical experience He said Student relations In his campaign Carr also said he would give background information to the students as to why things are the way they are "Ideally” he said “the best way is for students to put their problems or suggestions in the suggestion boxes and to include their phone numbers We will ( Continued on page 3 ) Executive Council wants foreign student office to have more personnel The Executive Council passed a resolution requesting an additional person be hired to assist the foreign student office even if it Incomes necessary to levey an additional fee against all inter- national students registering at USU Tliis person would work in the area of foreign student programming book’’ said Mrs Denton “And sometimes we wonder why " Mrs Denton wonders a great deal about the success of Passages (the “Dr Spock” of adult years) and of the “gothic” section which is stocked with such titles as Purity’s Passion and The Flame and the Flower “Books about later life and paperback romances don’t seem like the kind of book that would go on a campus but they do” she said Another puzzling buying trend is the USU preference for old classics over modem ones “Except for books by Hermann Hesse our modern lit section doesn’t do too well” said Mrs Denton who thinks there may be several reasons why the classics move “Many of these books are required for classes” she said “Many parents buy them for their children Then too they are a bargain” Priced at under a dollar these books by authors from Dickens to O Henry are in- expensive even for paper The resolution also requested an additional secretary by hired for the foreign student office The council felt many of the foreign students do not receive adequate orientation to assist them in adjusting to the campus and customs of the local culture The council will seek funds to provide for this resolution backs They may also become collectors’ items some day since fewer and fewer publications are dealing in the classics Besides these enduring favorites there are a few other books that remain perennial sellers in the bookstore The Greatest Salesman in the World ( a fiction account of Jesus which is found in the business section of the bookstore ) Religious books ( which Mrs Denton feels are purchased for substance rather than style since the literary quality of many of these books is not notable) Runners-u- p in long-terpopularity are trendy books which keep capturing new markets as new students come to the campus “We are still selling Cowgirls Get th Blues Slapstick The Monkey Wrench Gang and Zen and the Art of Motorm cycle Maintenance” said Mrs Denton “Most of these books have
