The compact visited during a two-da- Friday-nig- MEIER UNIVERSITY JOJRNAL welcome for ht 13 Utah campuses bus tour. y Iron County to install emergency mapping system By JOY COONEY jcooneysuujournal com The Iron County Shenffs Office and cell phone companies will soon make it possible to track 911 phone calls made from cell phones The system will be in sometime this said Devin Larsen, Iron Count fall, communications specialist Once the Global Positioning System will mapping software is installed, dispatch have the ability to track emergency cell phone calls on their monitors, he said Dispatch will then direct officers to the callers location Destry Griffiths, a Public Safety peace officer, said the cell phone system will parallel the urrent land line system It will enhance the capabilities for officers to respond by including coll phones, he said Incoming phone calls will automatically transmit a latitude and longitude coordinate on the dispatchers monitor, Larsen said The software will immediately translate the coordinate into an address that will pinpoint the callers location Linda Petty, Iron County communications g c supervisor, said if an address is not available, the system will offer the nearest intersection or specify distance from certain landmarks Right now, if mobile phone callers cannot identify their location, dispatchers call local cell phone companies to verify what tow'er is transmitting the call Even then, that sometimes could only narrow the search by a hundred mile circumference, which doesnt really help much m an emergency situation, she said Petty said GPS technology will benefit the fire department ambulance services and law enforcement It will definitely reduce response time and will make the dispatchers interrogation and address verification process much easier, she said The GPS capabilities will be especially beneficial to students not familiar with the aiea Larsen said It will reduce the need for the dispatcher to depend on the caller to give a specific location With GPS, I would definitely feel safer because Im not from around here, said Bnanna Stewart, a freshman nursing major I like knowing someone from Clearfield could find me even if I dont know exactly where Im at Eventually, Iron County will acquire the technology to allow a visual reference on dispatch and patrol vehicle monitors to see the patrol vehicles location in reference to the callers location, Petty said This technology will allow dispatch to communicate the officers proximity, she said More and more people are using cells, Griffiths said When rather than land-linethe (GPS) system comes on line, it will have benefits county-wid- e Cell phones have to have the GPS chip installed in order for dispatch to receive a transmission, Larsen said Current FCC regulations mandate all new cell phones be installed with chips, said Doug Campbell, owner of Cel Tell Communications As far as I know, Nextel is the only company that has equipped all their new phones with the GPS chip, he said Spnnt and Nextel merged, but not all Spnnt phones are compliant yet, he said If youre unsure if your phone has the chip, check with your cell phone company, Larsen said Petty said keeping up with the technology is difficult, but vital for the Iron County Shenffs office Suddenly Facing a tighter Budget? k, I A GPS-capab- BY HOLLY PHOTO ILLUSTRATION COBABE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL The Iron County Sheriffs Office and cell phone companies are making it possible to track emergency cell phone calls.
