Show Harming With Vincent by Harris Vincent Summer school, long considered the bastard child of the University, is finally achieving some status as a real part of the college year. Better Bet-ter courses are being offered. More care is exercised as to who attends. College education is finally taking the year-round-look. At one time the summer look of the college experience was do-nothing do-nothing classes. A great lack of many courses that are required for graduation and professors that did not have anything else to do were the common rule. For a long time anyone could get in if they only had the almighty dollar, ft didn't matter what kind of a high school record or past college performance anyone had. Wave that almighty dollar and he was in. Not so anymore. Frank McKean, director of admissions, has taken real and concrete steps to curb the open-to-anyone-with-the-dollar pol- j icy. Under his direction tougher Summer School entrance requirements require-ments are being enforced providing provid-ing the University with a better studentbody during the summer. This only speaks of excellence and improvement. The Dean of the Summer School and his staff have also made great strides in beefing up the courses offered and changing the attitudes of the professors teaching them. There still appears to many on the summer teaching staff, how-, how-, ever, who feel that summer school would be a great thing if there weren't any students. Profs do neea a time for research, but thegreater need is quality teaching. This situation, sit-uation, of course, is not one unique to the Summer School. DurtagtJ other terms profs manifest mis attitude. Perhaps the University administrators admin-istrators need to make it clear to both themselves and the vrotesson that the first duty of a teacher is to teach. Research is necessary, but why expect the Profs to do both. Why not hire some researcn ers and relax the old "publish or perish" pressures? Anyway, summer school 1 to gating ga-ting better, now someone neeas look at the requirements the Dm sion uses for letting student en roll. It appears to be the same the-dollar-you're-in attitude .TM provides for easier Pf.f nfor night classes, but does nothing for improving the standards of m University. |
