"He's amazing," Ute guard Marc Jackson said. "He throws up some crazy stuff, but he's great." The 15-1 run resulted in the Utes holding a game-high 16-point lead. But like the Rams on Saturday, the Cowboys proved to be a pesky bunch. Coach Steve McClain's team got the lead chipped away to seven late in the game, but ran out of time when the Utes kept hitting their foul shots and buckled down on the Cowboy's end of the floor. "It goes back to our defense," U coach Ray Giacoletti said. "I don't have a problem if we don't do a good job shooting the basketball. The defensive end is something we can control" With their 17th straight win, the Utes now hold the second-longest win streak in the nation, trailing only No. 1 Illinois' run of 25 straight. The Cowboys proved to be a tougher team in the first half than the last time the two teams met. Rather than giving the Utes an 18-0 cushion like they did in Laramie, Wyoming hung tough, leading through much of the half. The gridlock started right from the beginning. The first half featured eight lead changes and nine ties. Through 17 minutes, neither team had held a lead of more than four points. The Utes (22-3, ro-o MWC) stuck to a similar script from Saturday's win over Colorado State, making a The No. 14 Utes used a 15-1 run big second half run, weathering a midway through the second half to late rally and getting another huge come away 71-62 winners against performance from Andrew Bogut. visiting Wyoming (14-9, 6-4 MWC) Two nights after putting in a caMonday night. reer- high 33 points, Bogut almost Joe Beatty Sports Editor Utah's Richard Chaney and Marc Jackson battle Wyoming's Steve Leven Monday night at the Huntsman Center for a loose ball late in the second half. k PLAYER OF THE GAME Andrew Bogut The Utes would eventually start to pull away, using five points from Marc Jackson and four from Bogut to go on an n-o run, taking a 33-24 lead. The Cowboys managed to stem the bleeding at the very end of the half, cutting the margin to 3328 going into the locker room. "We weren't real good in the first half," Giacoletti said, not surprised how the game transpired. "At times this year we come out of halftime and put together a run to get us over the hump." Bogut scored 10 of the Utes1 first 12 points, then leveled off a little bit. The sophomore finished the first period with 16 points and eight rebounds. The Utes are now four victories away from being the first MWC team to win their whole slate of conference games. Their chances will be sternly tested this weekend when they travel to Air Force and New Mexico. Both schools knocked off the Utes at home last year, including New Mexico laying a 70-54 rout on Utah at The Pit. jbeatty@chronicle.utah.edu es 71 Cowboys 62 Utah No. Player Min. Brian Shaw Sports Reporter Major League Soccer expansion team Real Salt Lake captured its first win, a 10 final on Sunday in Tampa, Fla. during the Tom Fitzgerald Soccer Festival. While the win was only during the training camp and not during the regular season, Real head coach John Ellinger and his staff were nevertheless "visibly excited and pleased for the historic win," according to team officials. Earlier this week, Real opened its training camp exhibition season with a 51 loss to defending MLS Cup champions D.C. United, with SuperDraft 4th round choice and forward Luke Kreamalmeyer slamming in the only Real goal. Kreamalmeyer was also honored this week with the first-ever Tom Fitzgerald Memorial TYophy in recognition of his MVP performance at the 2005 MLS Combine. The combine took place before the draft from Jan. 9-13. The Utah MLS expansion franchise next faced the US Under-17 National Team, featuring Real's SuperDraft No. 1 pick, Nikolas Besagno. Besagno played all 90 minutes for the national team and is scheduled to join Utah's MLS team in early summer. Real's staff widely praised the young player for his "tenacity." Real settled for a 1-1 tie versus the U17s, who have also been in training at the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Real forward Clint Mathis scored Salt Lake's goal one day after appearing as a reserve for the U.S. national team in their World Cup qualifying match versus Trinidad and Tobago. The Real Salt Lake "B" team notched a 1-0 win, the club's first-ever in the preseason, against the MLS San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday morning in Tampa. Real midfielder and recent supplemental draft No. r pick Stephen Rhyne knocked home the lone goal in the 49th minute. Salt Lake's "A" team followed that victory up with another win, this time 2-0 Sunday evening at the hands of the MLS Columbus Crew. Real forward Jason Kreis had both goals for the new Utah expansion team, both of which came in the first half. For the Sunday performances of the new MLS franchise, Real coach John Ellinger and his staff rewarded the players with an off-day yesterday. Training camp is back in Bradenton and the IMG Academy this week, with scrimmages featuring Real and the MLS Kansas City Wizards on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and a U.S. amateur select squad Saturday at 10 a.m. bshaw@ chronicle.utah.edu Last Week's Winner: Jeff Cortes (12-4) 1 mm Pigskin Picks Team shows marked improvement in training camp exhibitions While he led two points shy of his career-high ' set Saturday, the sophomore center still managed 31 points and 13 rebounds, along with four assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
