LEWIS I warrajiefl t , liTAII An event of chronological interest of the past week, happening in the early part of the last century, directly connects itself with the gallant uignianaers ot tne British army. The laurels which wreathe thebrowi of the men by the small events of the Ashantee war are no novelty. Ihey are used to laurels. Their history is a record of hard knncks en many a bloody field. In 173J, the British government raisd six companies of Highland soldiers, which were formed into a regiment, nomiually to pre serves peace in the Northern parts of bcetland, but more probably with a view to take the place of some Eng lish regiments, which might be re quired in Scotland, as about that time the loung Pretender, looking over the channel from if ranee, bemn to be regarded as troublesome. This regiment became celebrated as the "Black Watch," and tour yr T2 afterwards was marched to London en ruute to ?erve ia Germany with the armr. Ate men, believing that the enlistment did not include foreign service, refused to go, but were pacified by the report that their trip was merely that the king might review them. The king did not review them, but left for the continent, and thereiuient, comuiaudud by Lord Stmphill, was inspected on May 14, 1843 The men were piqued at the and alter the. reslight of the , view was over, considering that the duty was over, fur which they had been called to Lndon, determined to force th'tir way back to their homts in Scotland. It was a desperate attempt, but they made it. At midnight on the 18th of May, one hundred and fifty of them, w.th arms and fourteeu rounds of ball cartridge each, commenced their perilous march to the North, led by Corporal Samuel Macpherson. News of their flight did not reach London until the seveuth day such was the oi communication and then couriers were s ml on every road leading northward, the authorities fearing violence fn ai the known despera tion of the men, who were regarded as savage mountaineers. But they traveled mostly by night, and did no harm They kept between the two northern roads, and the authorities had great difficulty in ascertaining their whereabouts. On the 21st General Blakeney came up with them at Stamford, in Lincolnshire, (he Highlanders encamping in strong p si ti m on a hill, surrounded by a wood, near Ouudle in the adjoining county of Northampton. .,A clergyman named Creed persuaded them to surrender and trust to the mercy of the crown They agreed to this on a condition of pardon, but Crted could not give it. Tbey were determined to die rather than Burrender, and messengers were dispatched to the Duke of Montague stating their demands. Meanwhile, Capt. Ball, commanding a body of cavalry, ascertained their position aud demandIn a second ined their surrender terview with them they showed him their strength of position, which ap Dears to have been constructed skilfully on the remains of one of the old Roman earthworks still existing in England, and which have puzzled antiquarians so much. They declared they would die with arms in their hauds; they were soldiers and would defend ii to the last. To this Bull replied that he, too was a soldier, and would kill the last man, if it came to a fight. He would offer no other terms but that of an unconditional surrender. A guard of two men conducted hiui out of the wood, to whom Ball offered a full pardon, which was accepted. One of these returned to the camp and induced others to surrender, and these in turn induced others; aud so on until, during the night, every man passed over to Blakeney's camp. The event created great interest at the time; the flight of Corporal Mac pherson and his hundred and fifty of the Black Watch being compared to the retreat of the ten thousand led by Xeuophon. Rather a florid comAn example had to be pliment! so and made, Corporal Macpherson and his brother and a private namad Shaw were executed on July 12th, in presence of the others, and while the doomed men behaved with resolution and propriety their old comrades joined in prayer with earnestness and deep regret. This disloyalty of the Black Watch infre-quonc- to the imported Guelpha was, how-- 1 ever, soen washed out by acts of ds- perate carnage on the field of Fonte-no- XFL X jSL 2D, and about the middle of the cenAfter the Charles, silly young PIOXEEIi tury.
