Other officials are indicted in-dicted and still others who have confessed to tbe misappropriation of funds have been saved by the statute of limitations. The investigation has shown that grafting has been rampant here for years. Starting with a balance of $40,000 in the band, the Freeholders have reduced it until the countr owes $75,000, Among the startling discoveries are: A former official kept $50,000 of the county funds and loaned them (Special to The Telegram.) T0M8 RIVER, N. J June 24. Muck-Rakers have been stirring graft in a tea cup in this little town. Following Fol-lowing their investigation seventeen officials, among them highly respected citizens, have been indicted for looting eounty funds, the charges ranging from perjury to the illegal acceptance of money. Of the Board of Freeholders, ten are under indictment, including the director of the board, and another, Joseph B. Cox, Jr. Three former Free- back to tha county at a high rata of interest. A former Sheriff collected $350 in fines and made no acconnting. The Freeholders were allowed to spend three-quarters of 1 per cent of the assessed valuation for county par-poses. par-poses. This amounted to $35,000. They raised $100,000 by issuing notes and spent $125,000 in one year. One Freeholder sold tne county lumber from an estate for 50 per cent more than was "paid for the estate. Supposed to meet about twice a month and to receive $2 per day for attendance, some of the Freeholders Freehold-ers are charged with collecting as high as thirty-five days' pay in one month. A steel bridge that cost $3500 was sold to the county for $12,000. Hii of the indicted men are church deacons, one a postmaster and another a highly-respected merchant. Politics has not figured in the investigation, as the grafters belong to both of the big parties. Oo to Saltalr on Pioneer Day. The place, to go on Pioneer day is Saltair.
