Show Wednesday, February 4, 1976 Ptga2 NecpspapeR Talk OPPOSITIONTOASUPPOSITION How about It ? Word has spread about town that control of the ; Memorial Building will soon be passed 'from Summit County, to Park City. The only visible reaction to this possibility has been decidedly negative. ',', - - In a letter sent to County Commissioner Dale Leavitt, a number of Park Citizens presented two strong objections to a city takeover of the Memorial Building. They stated opposition to any change in the present use of the building and observed that perpetuation of the building is one of the few tangible services performed for Park City by the county. The concern shown for the fate of the Memorial Building is understandable and commendable. There are many local clubs and organizations which make good use of its facilities, and resistance to change is natural. But apprehension due to a possible county-city transfer is premature at best. .' The city has not proposed, much less reached, - any agreement with Summit County regarding the future of the. Memorial Building. Should city officials determine that a takeover might be beneficial, we feel "confident that before a decision is macte a public hearing will be held and that public input will weigh heavily in the final determination. Opposition to bng-term-no-cost leasing of the Memorial Building bv the ritv is unfounded at this point. The provisions of any such arrangement have yet to be and may never be formulated,; The major impetus for a city takeover is maximization of the building's usage. Few of us would deny that most of the Memorial Building languishes in disuse most of the time. ' A pivotal point in forthcoming discussions will ; be the feasibility of utilizing the building more fully without shoving aside its present users. That there is little evidence of county tax dollars being spent in Park City on things other than the Memorial Building is a valid contention. Indeed, why should the city assume a financial burden now being carried by the county? If Park .City does propose the trattffej qf control fchould not be done withdtotf 6 ilnaifciaf Ub t mitment from the county equal to their present expenditure.. v But why would the county give up control of the building and still shell out the bucks? Because the Memorial Building has proved to be an administrative ad-ministrative headache for a government as far away as Coalville and because the building might be put to better use (with a decrease in vandalism) under city supervision. Without county support, the city-cannot afford to maintain main-tain the building. The cost in dollars to the county would be the same in either case but with city supervision the county would be freed from the irksome task of overseeing a building used almost exclusively by Park City residents. We can neither condemn nor condone a plan that does not exist. If a transfer of control is proposed, it should be studied carefully and be the subject of public discussion. Assuming an obligation which will not benefit the city as a whole makes no sense. And passing up an opportunity op-portunity to receive needed facilities and to exploit the potential of an existing structure with no loss to the community would also be foolish. Why drop out of the game before the cards are dealt? It won't cost anything to see how strong our hand is. . Tbe NecospapeR PciblisbeR . . . . . s ; .' .V.J. Hoivand Stable EditOR. . . ............. One answer is better communication, cooperation, organization and planning-which planning-which is the basic premise of the Park City Chamber of Commerce. But to make the Chamber a viable organization, requires an investment of time, energy, and money by everyone interested in-terested in improving the quality of business and life in Park City. The Chamber needs YOU ... Together there is no limit as to what we can accomplish, The immediate goals of the Chamber are: (1) Improve the central information office, where the business of selling Park City can be handled on a professional basis, to handle telephone - and walk-in business, accounting and the dissemination of brochures and mailings. (2) Establish a full time Executive Director with public relations experience to handle fund raising, publications, coordination of activities and events and to spearhead and direct new ideas.. . ? - 4 Future goals are now in the planning stages to help Park City become a four season destination resort. Your membership will entitle you to a voice in the Chamber, s 1 " WmT w What do you think about the proposed chair lift that would connect the Resort with Main Street?; Nick Nass-The chair lift would not only benefit the Main Street Merchants but would also spur development of increased building in the "old" part of town by providing the lodges, hotels and condos with a walking-distance chair lift. Harry Reed-I think a chair lift to the traditional town area is the best way to keep this area alive. The lift would not only cut down on the resort's parking and lift congestion problems by providing an alternate route to the top of the maountain but would present Park City with a novel attraction as well. Diane Thornhill-I think it would be geat. People wouldn't have to go all the way to the resort to get on the lifts. It would also probably really help the businesses on Main Street. I think it's the best idea anyone has come up with lately. Ted Deacon-I think it would boost business by bringing a lot more people downtown. For Park City in general I would say things would be looking up. ' Tim O'Brien-1 donfreally know. I'll believe it when I see it. As far as the distance that is involved in-volved I do think it is feasible though. To tell you the truth I hope this hot weather stays here and all the snow melts so I can go fishing. Danny Earle-I think the chair would bring buisness back to Park City that is now either going go-ing to the resort or to Salt Lake., Right now thousands of neoDle come ui s and ski on the weekends at the resortjand very few of, them ever eet UDtown. lh ' A i X Wendy Wyatt-It would help , the business to prosper on Main Street and it would offer a nice view of the town. I think it would also relieve some of Park City's traffic problems. letters to certificate of membership decal, . and a monthly newsletter. Enclosed you will find a Park City Chamber of Commerce application form and an explanation of the suggested fair share dues schedule. Your help and investment is vital. Join us for a better Park City.1 Sincerely, Board of Directors Park City Chamber of Commerce Dear Editor: I am glad to see the Newspaper giving Nordic skiing a boost this winter by publishing columns by Bob Kassow and Jim Miller. But as one of the slower people who participates in the citizen races at he golf course I would appreciate it if you could find space to publish the names and times of everyone who racees, instead of just the names (and no times) for the first three places. If space is a problem, it would seem to me you could have this stuff set in 8-point type( "agate" is what we call it in the old printing biz).f That way you could fit the ' entire race results in less ? space that the partial results now occupy. Sincerely, Frank Erickson Peoa, Utah 84061 Editor: h Riding up . the Thaynes -chair the other day, I had the priviledge of being ac companied by one of the directors from the Park City Co. business office. We small talked briefly and then he m mm memtioned that he hadn't seen me on the mountain, much this yean "No", I replied, "I've been skiing the other areas," "Why?", he asked. Before replying, I realized the opportunity to express some recent g rievances regarding the skiing at Park City. A chance to explain and enlighten one of the upper-eschelons to the everyday hassels of Park City lift operations! I began to explain that one got in more skiing for ones money at the other canyon and ultimately skiing a day at Park City resulted in extreme frustration. A puzzled look came over his face, could it be . he didn't know?.?? Obviously he had not been 1 riding the Payday chair, the afternoon it stopped, broke for one hour and 5 minutes, Luckily the day we were left hanging temperatures were conclusive to sunburn and not frostbite. The auxilary Dower, puttered, stopped, puttered us up to the top. Couldn't relate to the nauseating stopping and starting, slowing and going, of each and every Payday ride experienced this season? There's always the gondola, I suppose. The new policy of splitting groups up into four, at any cost, is rather . infuriating in-furiating to the groups of 4 friends who have been waiting in line only to be thrown apart at the last minute. Is this for efficiency's ef-ficiency's sake? "I think that if the Payday chair was operating, drastic California lift line techniques wouldn't be'necessary, "I said. It's bad for local morale! And then there's the new Prospector - s ii mi tSQ I'" HARRY REED TED DEACON WENDY WYATT l -If- jmvlo iimo lifts. Another horror story. "So you see," I remarked, ''inefficient lift operations at Park City has turned skiing into an unpleasant and irritating occurance." In rebuttal to my whaling, he -commented, "Well , next year when we put a chair up to Jupiter Bowl ..." "You missed the point," I said with a sign. This letter only hopes to act as a constructive effort to bring attention to the con-tinous con-tinous breakdowns and arbitrary ar-bitrary slow clowns of the Park City Co. Chairlifts. If a beginner or little tike can't ride the chair, they shouldn't ski the hill. That's what First Time and 3-Kings lifts are for. Let's speed up the chairs and get some skiing in. There is much grumbling on the mountain this year, locals and tourists alike, And it's not the lift lines, it's the LIFTS, So Park City Co.. now that you are aware of the problem do something about it!!
