The Book of Mormon is a compilation com-pilation of writings of prophets and historians in ancient America. It was translated from a "Reformed Egyptian" into English in the early 19th Century by Joseph Smith, first prophet and president of the Church. Church translation officials say that the book of scripture, which has the subtitle, "Another Testament of Jesus Christ", was translated into six new languages during 1987: Akan (Fante), Papiamento, Pohnpeian, Tagalog, Trukese and Zulu. In addition, a complete Book of Mormon has been published in modern-day Greek. Only excerpts from the book had previously been available in Greek. Akan (Fante) is spoken in Ghana by some three million people. There are approximately 5,000 Latter-day Saints in the country. Taylor 489-5369 Mark My Words The sup by Mark Conroy Mormonism is the preferred religion of squirrels. Out of respect for my Mormon friends, I will reword that. Mormons behave like bees and ants. How's that? Yelling at me won't do you a bit of good, I know, I've seen your basements. Uncovering the ins and outs of Mormon behavior makes me feel like an anthropologist. It's fascinating and just might get me job with National Geographic someday. When it comes to interesting in-teresting lifestyles, you people are every bit as absorbing as Eskimos or New Guinea headhunters. "Every good Mormon needs a two year supply," Parnell said to me one day. "And I got part of mine in this hsrc sdck ' "Supply?" I queried. "Of what?" "Thirty-aught-six and some twenty-two." It turned out that he had more than 5,000 bullets in his two year supply. He also had a keg of powder, bar lead, and three-hundred jars of salmon eggs. "I don't plan on starving come hard times," Parnell said. "I might be off base here," I said. "But I always thought you guys were supposed to store food." He scratched his head and looked around. "I think Charlotte's got some peanut butter around here somewhere. Unless we ate it already." Having a supply of food is a good idea. Even a back sliding Irish Catholic can see that. Times are starting to get tough. The summer of our greed is ending and winter is just around the corner. The signs of it -bank failures and market crashes -should be as clear to us as the falling leaves and snow flurries are to the squirrels. I'm going to marry into a ready made food supply. Brenda has a thousand pounds of wheat and a quarter of a ton of honey in her basement. This is both good and bad. We won't starve come hard times, but lugging all of it out of her cellar and into mine makes me wonder if we will actually live to see those hard times. And then again, after chewing your way through that much wheat and honey, you could well find yourself wishing a hernia had killed you during the good times. THIRD WARD YW. RS. PM. Phillips 489-4132 ply Having your intestines relocate in your thighs is only one of the hazards of being a diligent Mormon with respect to food storage. You may also wish to consider that if you ignore food long enough, it will eventually develop (literally) a mind of its own and become unruly. I know Mormons who will no longer go down into their storage rooms. Fortunately, Brenda is not into canning things. After five years in Utah, I have seen nearly everything put into a Mason jar. With a can, at least you are unable to see what it is you plan on eating. I've seen things floating in those bottles that would scare the life out of the guy in charge of stuffing anatomical studies into Bell jars at the office of the county coroner. That brings an interesting in-teresting question to mind with regard to Mormon canning secrets. How do you folks get all those, pickles to look just like Roger Sturman.
