Show Open letter to faculty and staff Dear Colleagues: It conceivable that these questions are not uppermost in your minds but they concern money and therefore seem worthy of some consideration They are questions (and objections) sometimes raised when staff members are accosted by solicitors for the United Way fund and asked to give their “fair share HOW MUCH IS ONE’S “FAIR is and we appreciate more whatever they can give but we believe most $5 contributors could easily give $10 $15 or $25 We recognize the fact that there are other deserving charities and that some people have good reasons for favoring them — and we certainly will not refuse their token donations “I CAN’T AFFORD TO CONTRIBUTE MY INFLATION - WEAKENED DOLLARS TO UNITED WAY” SHARE”? " Learn other peoples Perhaps more should be said on missionary work It was not the Intent of "Destructive Missions" to antagonize the Mormon or any other church The purpose of the editorial was to state one point: it's hard to be a Christian and still hold on to a non-Christi- an culture One or the other or both must suffer when the two cultures converge And the destruction of another man's culture to be replaced by another opposite culture is not right There are many kinds of missionaries There are those that go into an area of extreme poverty to try to upgrade the living conditions of a people by merging the good points of two cultures and there are those who view their culture as absolute unbending and go into both European cultural areas and areas espousing other cultural ideas with the intention of changing the lifestyle of a people But does any person have the right or the ability to say that his culture is best? Is not what a person believes his own business and not to be tampered The equivalent of one day’s pay has been suggested but each individual must determine that for himself Keep in mind that even though many of our colleagues in other institutions and some of our Logan and Cache Valley neighbors have incomes higher than ours we cannot deny that as a group we enjoy a very favorable position in our community and we have an obligation to support its charities WHAT IS THE USUAL FACULTY-STAF- CON- F TRIBUTION? In recent years faculty-staf- f donations have ranged from $5 to and the average has been approximately $30 This year we would like to maintain the $30 $250 average while substantially increasing- the number of contributors We would also like to see the end of the $5 “token” donation from those who can afford substantially more There are some who cannot afford - charities Derserving are among the last things a community’s citizens can afford to neglect We all know that with the exception of Wall Street brokers it is the handicapped aged and needy who are hit hardest by inflation We should really increase our contributions enough to offset the inflation-cause- d problems faced by the United Fund agencies “THIS COMES AT A BAD TIME FOR ME” Most outlays come at a bad time but you can (a) make a pledge and indicate a GOOD time to pay or (b) give through payroll deduction A monthly deduction of only one or two (or five or ten) dollars is quite painless to the giver soothing to his conscience and helpful to UNITED WAY Thanks to you It’s working! Gordon E Porter Campus Chairman United Way of Cache Valley with by "outsiders?" Whatever one's belief's are these are still valid questions But they cannot be answered by spouting out the teachings of holy men The Pope the President of the Mormon Church and other leaders of religion cannot answer questions that pass through cultural borders for they have very special interests on only one side of the border To the missionaries who not only teach their values but also learn from those they teach possibly an apology is in order It was not intended to degrade you or your work because in reality you are not only missionaries but also the builders of new possibly better cultures To the missionaries that go into the with world" of intention the "pagan singular teaching "lesser" peoples what is "right" no apology is necessary because in the long run someone or something will prove you wrong anyway Richard Brady closed-minde- d Editor all free souls: (Who may not be as free as they think) To “My country tis of thee sweet land of liberty” This following poem is from one of the many who lost his “liberty” to our honest so-call- ed democracy and fair judicial system His beliefs and morals were different from those of this tight moralistic town That seems to be enough in Logan He flew their flag and lost his freedom Morning of the First Table top queen locked behind bars Only past one night lost to her charms Walk around slowly light up a cig Look at the ceiling put out my cig Spit towards the toilet glare in the mirror Think about the mountains light up a cig Hospital green shadowed with bars Look out the window can’t see my stars STUDENT LIFE it th official tfudent publication of Utah State University and it written and edited by students EDITORIAL POLICY is solely the responsibility of the editorial staff The editor can reserve the right to refuse any publication at hit discretion EDITORIAL OPINIONS are solely those of the editorial board and those writers with signed articles LETTER POLICY The editor reserves the right to edit refuse or print any letter All line and signed with name and student number leVttrs must be typed on a Names may be withheld by the Editor however at the student's request Published during the school year except during finals week by the Associated Students of USU Editorial offices University Center 31 5 business office C mter 317 Printed by the Box Elder News and Journal Brigham City Entered as second class postage at University Station Logan Utah 84321 Subscription rates $6 per year $2 per quarter Correspondence should be addressed to PO Box 1249 60-ipa- I received a note from him shortly after this poem “I can’t read yet writing is too revealing and depressing I just want to take a walk I want to laugh have a beer cry anything Come take me away on your horse ride all day lay in the leaves scratch my back” My horse is waiting for me now if only I could 219-64-73- A learning trip? Editor Student Life: It is amazing that some people can be so ignorant and emotional as to claim no missionary tries to force his views on unwilling listeners and that the Student Life is a “worthless” publication because of disagreement with one editorial I was grateful to the Student Life for bringing up the problem of bad missionury practices because I have experienced them myself with at least 3 people who have tried continually to convert me against my will in a condescending and obnoxious manner without respect to my own views Many of my LDS friends have not attempted to convert me and I would be much more likely to join the church from knowing them and how they live their lives rather than being forced into it or talked into it when I am not ready An LDS member cannot ignore the problem of bad missionury practices in his church and claim they don’t exist just because he has not personally experienced the problem Has anyone considered that the LDS church might ne able to benefit from such an editorial as “Destructive Missions”? Those who have been too forceful in their missionary approach may able to improve their techniques and thus bring more members into the church be Name withheld Upon Request |
