Show MILLION DOLLAR CUT IN FARMERS BILLS reduction secured by farm bureau and allied interests A cut in the fannia freight bill lias has been secured by the farm bureau and allied interests in obtaining front from the interstate commerce commis commission slon a filial ruling on the alie charges upon mixed carloads of 0 livo live stock the mixed carload case was first submitted to tile the interstate commerce I 1 commission about three years ago last year the commission rendered a decision the case was later reopened of ened upon a petition from the carriers tile tho rule chich had previously applied provided that charges should be 1 assessed upon a basis of minimum weight which was the highest applicable upon any kind of stock in the par car and that the rate should be the highest applicable upon any kind of stock in the car this made the charges tvr for fl a mixed carload of hogs and cattle considerably bly higher that than the charges cli arges for a straight carload of either the farm bure bureau au together with the others interested called attention to the fact that this method of mak maki 1 i ins ing charges seriously discriminate dl against operative cooperative co organizations and was not in accordance with the spirit spir of fair pliay p aay it was insisted th that t while such a rule might be proper fo fon dead freight which ordinarily loads load much in excess of the minimum weight it was not at all proper upon a commodity like live stock the in ter state commerce commission commissi oll apa ap j paren parent fly ly felt that the farm bureau argument was justified the rulef now prescribed to be put in effect on or before september 18 1923 is as follows a when cattle calves hogs sheep lambs goats kids horses and or rattles mules are shipped in mixed car loads charges shall lie be used on the carload rate and minimum weight for that kind of stock which on a straight carload basis produces the highest charge subject to the exceptions in b and ad c below b in no case except as provid i ed in paragraph c shall the charges per car be less than on a straight cari car i load of tile the lilg highest hest rated kind at ac I 1 j weight of the mixed shipment I 1 i c Ch charges argei on mixed gailond ship i ments of cattle and calves shall hotl exceed charges computed d on basis of 0 tile the cattle rate at actual weight of the entire shipment or at the cattle minimum weight if greater about 25 per cent of the receipts at the large markets consists of mixed cars the present ruling will mean a freight saving of from 3 to 5 3 a car |
