Book Discussion in the Valley: Wed., Feb. 7 @ 7:00 p.m. Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean. On August 5, 1949, a crew of fifteen of the United States Forest Service’s elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours later, all but three of these men were dead or mortally burned. Young Men and Fire recounts the story of the tragedy of the Mann Gulch fire, and the men who put their lives on the line to stop it. Stop by the reference desk to pick up a copy. A biography of one of America’s greatest presidents, focusing on his use of wit and humor, and his love of language. This book group is for kids in grades 3-5. It’s Time for Kindergarten Round Up at Valley Elementary! Once again it is time for “Kindergarten Round Up” at Valley Elementary. Kindergarten Round Up is for children who will turn 5 years old on, or before, September 1, 2018, and their parents. This year’s Round Up is planned for April 25 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If your child’s age requirement qualifies, please come into the school and register your student. To register, a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunization record is needed, along with photo identification of a parent. Mark Your Calendar for This Year’s Annual WSU Storytelling Festival Please mark your calendar and join us February 26, 27 and 28 for our 22nd Annual Weber State University Storytelling Festival. This year’s nationally acclaimed storytellers are Bil Lepp, Charlotte Blake Alston, Andy Offut Irwin, and Carolina QuirogaStultz. We also have 70 youth storytellers and regional storytellers as well. Thanks to the generous donations of many, all events are free to the public except for our fundraiser dinner Tuesday evening. Come early for best seating. Various events run from the Early Bird Stories at 9:30 a.m. and the Ogden Conference Center to Campfire Tales at 7:30 p.m. at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. Monday, February 26 and Tuesday February 27, events will be held throughout the day at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center, the Peery’s Egyptian Theater, the Elizabeth Stewart Treehouse Museum, WSU Shepherd Union Building, WSU Stewart Library, and outreaches at schools in the local districts. The affair is slated for February 12 and 13. Attendees need to select a date and time—from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Menu options include a main course of Parmesan Chicken, Beef Medallions, Fish & Chips, Cajun Chicken Linguini, or Vegetables (steamed vegies). The meal also includes soup or salad and bread and dessert—your choice of bread pudding or lemon curd with berries. Soroptimist is an international women’s organization for those women whose focus is to work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Almost 95,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community-based and international projects that benefit women and girls. Tickets may be requested by emailing deanleeann@yahoo.com or <reannereimschussel@ gmail.com> Eccles Community Art Center Announces Black & White Competition T h e E c c l e s Community Art Center’s Main Gallery will open a juried exhibition of artwork from our 16th Black & White Statewide Competition. This exhibition will open Friday, February 2, and continue on display through Saturday, March 31. An opening reception, at which awards will be posted, will be held February 2 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in association with Ogden‘s First Friday Art Stroll. Awards presented will include monetary awards for First-, Second-, and Third-place winners. The public is invited to attend the reception and to view the exhibited works. Admission to the art center’s galleries is complimentary. The 16th Black & White Statewide, a juried biennial competition, is open to recent works by Utah artists. Original work in all media, including paintings, prints, monoprints, drawings, graphics, photographs, pottery, sculptures, and textiles are eligible. Giclee and other reproduction prints will not be accepted. Works displayed will be in black, white and/or shades of gray. The art center staff appreciates the assistance of the juror, who reviews and curates works chosen for the exhibit, as well as assisting in the judging of awards. This competition is popular with Utah artists, photographers, and art center patrons. The public is invited to visit the Eccles Community Art Center and Carriage House Gallery during regular gallery hours.
