Show UTAH VALLEY NEWS Friday, September 29, 1939 Are Private Utilities Regulated Asks Mayor Mark Anderson the Utah Federation of Labor adopted its resolution at Price recently asking that Municipally-owne- d utilities be placed under the Public Service commission, it was the lame old crowd operating, under cover, at that convention as at other gatherings, camoflaging both their identity and When their purpose, declares Mayor Mark Anderson of Provo, who MWha aeb: regulates private utilities anyway? Tlmt resolution la the kind of this agency. But the 'gullible public has observed how the private monopoly Interests would force municipalities to charge themselves excessive rates In order that the tut Power company may do likewise, alias the Public Service without being embarrased with commission, because they think comparisons. The public know Ike public Is foolish enough to now that when municipal utilities kdieve that the Utah Power and are regulated by the elected rehr presentative of the people who Uakt company Is regulated IdJalatlon sponsored In nearly In the Union by the gftrr state gfetrle Bond and Share and They tber private monopolies. municipal utilities regulated a the appointed Utilities com- - own those utilities low rates Logan Is sn example. Prom 11& to 193C Logan's rates were Just half the Power company's fates. Finally the Power company Induced the Utilities commission to order Logan city to raise the city rates. "The City of Logan took Its case to the Supreme court of Utah and won. On this low rate Logan has met all bond payments. Including interest and principle, on schedule, has had free street lights for nine years, and at the same time has added much to the citys power plant. But what has the Power company done on Its HIGH rates? The Company has paid practically no bonds off, and has defaulted on many Interest payments. Yet this Company would regulate Logan and other municipalities' with ths help of the Public Ser- vice commission. If the people are foolish enough to listen to such arguments as were presented at Price, they would throw democracy Into reverse. It would place City affairs In the hands of an appointed commission of three men. It would place ELECTED commissioners under the control of sn APPOINTED commission. The Power company workers Ignore the very fundamentals of democracy. They would take control of local affairs out of the hands of the people and away from their elected representatives. The people will not be fooled. They are going to see to It that the Power company Is regulated end meets Its obligations as every municipality bas done before they ' place control of their own affairs in the hands of the Public Service commission, which has so far proved a failure In Utah In doing A jf(atihr Quist 3'uneral 160 OHc N. Coarnre 'Mayor Mayor Lundstrom of Logan, after seeing a synopsis of Mayor Anderson's comments on ihe resolution passed at the Price convention, wrote Immediately for Mayor Anderson's permission to publish his letter. Provos mayor Immediately granted such permission. Mayor Lundstrom also said: I certainly agree with you. I think It Is necessary that the people know what the Federation of Labor Is trying to do to cripple It appears municipal ownership. that the Power comany Is back of this movement I am sure that should anything like tlhs come before tbe legislature It would be detrimental to municipal ownership in the state."
