Tins is tho day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) when it is expected the question will be determined whether tho United States will be ruled by a republican or a democratic ydrnini-etratiofor the nest four years, and perhaps for a much longer It is the Centennial elecperiod. tion and will become noted for that alone. The presidential flection this year is alao the first, since the advent of the republican party to power in 1 SGI, sixteen years ago next March, inwhichthe chances aro pretty even which party will win the presidential chair. Hitherto each party has been confident ol success, but tho voting alone will prove which has the preponderance, and that will show it pretty clearly, as there are elections to Congress in all the States and Ter ntones in the linion but four this day, and also the appointment of electors in tho various States to con stitute the college of electors, who will meet in their respective States on the first Wednesday in Decern her (Gth) to give their votes for l're sident and Vice President of tho United States for the next four years' term. If the Rpublicana secure the vie tory, it is likely enough that things will go on pretty much as they have been going tho last few years, with probably a few spasmodic at tempts at reform. it the JJomocrats secure the victory, then wo may anticipate sweeping changes, as the doctrine, that to tho victors belong the spoils, and the consequent doctrine of ro tation in cilice, are still the doc trines of both parties. A change in office is sometimes beneficial, sometimes highly desirable, thougli it is not always and necessarily a benefit to the community. We can always hope that changes will be for the better, and very ften a change is a happy release at least. So far as the presidential election shall effect official and other changes in or materially affecting Utah, the hope exists that they will be for the better, thoutrh some of them may not be. n - from. Urent Inteirst lu the Election-- There is very deall the partments, Nearly chief officials and a proportion or. clerks being absent in their respective states voting. A deep interest is manifested throughout the city concerning tha presidential election, and crowds are already gathering around the telegraph and newspaper offices. IJoth Sides VtorKlujj Wnr! St. Louis, 7. The election Is passing with unusual quietness heavy throughout .the city and a breat h vote is being polled. Not a of the peace nor even an angry discussion, and not a single arrest have yet been reported, auU indication aro that there will not bo the slight est disturbance during the day No indications of tho result can bo given at this writing, but both sides are working hard for their renpec tive candidates. New York, 72 a.m. It is now raining furiously, with the prospect of continuing all day. The republicans are scarcely so easy, as their vote is mainly in the rural districts where long journeys to the polls are often necessary. The rain is generally believed to lose the republicans about 15,000 votes in the State. The rain also extends over New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire. The Times thinks the Indianapolis vote will be' at least 15.00U less than in October The vote will probably be onegreenback half less. The State will be closewith the chances evenly divided.
