W Beavers superintendent superintendent of the salary and allowance di divIsion division dl- dl vision of the Postoffice department by bya a letter leter received from the postmaster ofa of ofa t ta a Western city who in response to inquires inquiries inquiries in in- quires said he did not desire an addition addition addition addi addi- tion to his clerical cercal force This is the first time on record in the history of the department that a postmaster did not wish his force Increased This man even admits that his clerks are working overtime and yet he does not want more help helt The case was so unusual that the letter letter of the postmaster ter was selected from the hundreds which are received daily daiy and was commented com corn upon by the officials of the de de- de de department The postmaster said sid I trust nothing nothing will wi b be done to disturb disturb disturb dis dis- dis- dis the present arrangement of clerks in this office They are all al satisfied the way it is We keep our office open after after after af af- af- af ter the usual supper time here until The clerks how however ver divide up the time en on duty in the evenings between en them so that some of them are off duty when the mails mais are light I realy really do not know how we ve could use any more clerks cerks in this office We certainly do not need them them It I would be impossible to find work for them in the dull dul season It woud divide the responsibility and be demoralizing to the service |
