Tho German government has entered a formal protest pro-test against tho language used by Captain Cap-tain Coghlan of tho Raleigh, at tho Union Lcaguo club banquet In Now York last Friday night. Tho protest was lodged with Secretary Secre-tary Hay through the German ambassador ambas-sador Herr Von Ilollcbcn. Secretary Hay replied that the language appeared ap-peared to havo been used at a dinner In a club, and could not bo regarded as an official or public utterance In the enso that would warrant the stato department de-partment lu acting. Howover, tho navy department was fully competent to take such action as the case seemed to require. With this statement tho ambassador was content for the time at least, and will doubtless awatt a rcasonablo Irnght of time upon tho navy department. |
