Show The Lady Will Clip You . . By Sandra King There's Vanya Nelson, pretty housewife, mother and career woman. And her career? The lady is a barber! Well we thought it quite different but Vanya says there are many women barbers in Sweden, and that is where she took her barber schooling, and owned her first barber shop. ' The shop was near a large and prominent brewery in Stockholm and she did not want for customers as the men soon learned of her fine work and her business was soon flourishing. She studied her apprenticeship for 4 years prior to opening her shop. Vanya joined the LDS Church and found herself cutting the hair of many of the missionaries mission-aries in Sweden, and then one day she found herself making ready to come to the United States. In 1939 she came to Salt Lake, passed the state examinations for her barbers license and was offered the "first chair" in a shop in Provo but her home and her husband, Newel Nelson were In Salt Lake and Vanya did not want to move or sell their home. Later the Nelsons were called back to Sweden on an LDS mission. mis-sion. For this they sold their home! He was Branch President in Gothemberg. Vanya found herself her-self occasionally cutting the missionaries mis-sionaries hair, cooking for them and teaching them the Swedish language. She has not practiced ' her barbers trade extensively since coming to Utah but about a year ago Mr. Nelson became ill and with the high cost of living and caring for a teen-age daughter and a son she decided to add to the family budget. She opened her shop in her home at 2151 South 8th East. But it is not all work for attractive attrac-tive Vanya Nelson. For she is an artist, not only in her trade as a barber, she also paints in oils. Beautiful paintings. You can make an appointment at her shop for one of the neatest hair cuts you've ever had . . . man, woman or child. And really now what man minds being clipped by a lady! |
