Show TIMES October 5, 2006 Updated youth supervision policy goes into effect BY BETH YOUNG .. Hilltop Times staff After being reviewed by family, security and health agencies on base, Col. Scott Chambers, 75th Air Base Wing commander, has signed-off on the updated youth supervision policy for Hill, which went into effect in September. "The purpose of this is to clear up any confusion for parents," said Capt. Michael Burpee, family advocacy officer. "It establishes a uniform standard for everybody on base. We hope that it will help base personnel better identify suspected child neglect as well as decrease unneeded phone calls to the 75th Security Forces Squadron about children who are unattended but fall within the parameters of the supervision guidelines." The guidelines cover newborns to high school graduates and the level of supervision required through these different ages, such as when they can be left without a sitter and for how long. It also addresses children walking to school, being left in a car, siblings as baby-sitters and curfews. "This is for the safety of the children and the health and well-being of the Air Force family," Captain Burpee said. "We all come from different backgrounds and experiences of being parented ourselves, so we all have different ideas about what is and isn't appropriate," he said. "Some of the ages may seem old for which activities children base, but anyone visiting the base for any reason - family, shopping or work. Violation of this policy could result in a referral to family advocacy, and as with any other base policy, the military member in violation will answer to his or may engage in without supervision, but several base agencies and committees contributed to the development of these guidelines." The policy applies not only to those living in housing or on her chain of command. The policy will be distributed to 75th Security Forces Squadron patrol units so that they will be aware of anyone not complying. Copies of the policy can be picked up at the Hill Family Advocacy Office, Bldg. 547, 75th Security Forces Squadron law enforcement desk, Hill Airman & Family Readiness Center (Bldg. 150) and at the Hill Chapel. For more information on the policy, call Family Advocacy at 777-3497.
