Show CEU Thursday February 26 1987 - 7 T Jenson remembered as one of the winningest coaches by Gtu J Magann of the Eagle 8taff A veteran coach who was known throughout the west as having one of the winningest basketball records threw in his towel in December and e became CEU's purchasing full-tim- agent Coach Curt Jenson cametoCEU in the spring of 1964 to coach baseball The next fall was when he began his 23 years as head coach for the CEU Eagles Jenson's first year as CEU's coach is still very basketball memorable to him CEU won the conference that year and hosted the regional playoffs CEU played their games in the National Guard Armory which was CEU packed for the occasion defeated Northern Idaho and Dixie College and went to the national The Eagles were tournament in the third game by a beaten finally from team Burlington Iowa from the community was Support the reason for Jenson's most memorable moment in coaching That moment came when CEU returned home from the national tournament and found Price City Hall packed with supporters Jenson introduced the team and showed off the trophy That year was probably the biggest deal we'd had in Price for athletics in a longtime" Jenson said An unusual turn of eventa that happened after that year was CEU left the ICAC conference and became independent Jenson said "It was the first time in a while that a team from Carbon College had won and I guess our conference wasn't used to it" CEU didn't justleavethe conference They were more or lessi kicked out" After Jenson's memorable first year CEU was in the regional playoffs four years in a row CEU's was 28-s record in 1967-6win-los- 8 0 "Our 1967-6- 8 team was probably the best team we've ever had" Jenson added Their victories that year included defeating the Australian national team CEU’s 1968 playoff opponent was Boise State CEU and Boise State each had won a game a piece in the three game tournament Jenson's most memorable game ever was the deciding game of this playoff The final garrie turned out to be very controversial with it tied at a minute and 30 seconds remaining CEU had possession of the ball and was penalized for "lack of action" which according to the ratebook should be assessed to the defense Boise State then made the technical foul shot and retained possession of the ball CEU lost the game and protested to the regional director The regional director Iwwever was the Boise State athletic director and CEU was unsuccessful The next year a line was put withe court to show where the ball should be advanced in that situation Because of that final game CEU did not go to the national tournament "I think we could have won the national tournament that year" Jenson added Four of CEU's 1968 starters schools to play went on to four-yebasketball and did very well The game has changed over the years and the players now are better long enough to get a new facility and see what would happen Jenson feels that rejoining the conference and acquiring the restrictions has hurt the CEU basketball program Jenson was an All-Sta- te basketball and baseball player in high school At the University of Utah he was on the and teams in both of these sports His junior year in college Jenson had the chance to sign with the Yankees He decided instead to finish his education and basketball career After college Jenson wanted to play professional baseball but was called to service in the US Air Force because he was a member of the ROTC program All-Distri- ct Jenson studied business management but while in the service he got a feel for coaching He decided to make coaching his life career Velwan baArtball coach Jenson says what was most rewarding wu to get to know the and seeing them develop in life "It's been a lot of fun and a lot of rewarding experiences for me" Jenson said "I hope to remain active and dose to the athletic program even though I'm out officially” Jenson added "CEU has given me an opportunity to do the things I've really wanted to do in my life" Jenson is now the CEU purchasing individually because they are getting better training facilities and agent and fulfilling the business side coaching" he added However he of his degree He says he is just kind from coaching after so says he would still compare the 1967-6- 8 of burned-ou- t team with any team over the many years "I'm really grateful to the school and the people here that years CEU then joined the ICAC which gave me the opportunity and stuck I think it's been a very provided good competition for years with me after Jenson said it was hard to rewarding experience to do It's really recruit kids to play in the Armory something you enjoy when everyone else was playing in great" Jenson says he is extremely CEU new facilities During 1988-8- 6 h thankful going to happen to CEU's basketball program Was CEU going to hire a new head coach? Was Coach Ronnie Stubbs going to take over the reigns of head coach? Or were they going to play out the year and then cut basketball completely? These are a few of the questions that went through my mind and the minds of many of the students I feel the administration and the athletic director made the right move in keeping Coach Stubbs and letting him prove himself Stubbs played for CE U from 1974-7- 6 and then went on to SUSC to finish out his college career He returned to CEU and became an assistant coach under Jenson and that is where he remained until before Christmas break when he took over as head coach ' Now with the situation that Stubbs was faced with when he took over as head coach a basketball team with a winloss record below 500 an unorganized team of individual players playing for themselves and not for the team And finally the transition of head coach from Jenson to Stubbs I feel Stubbs has done a great job in turning around the Eagles and getting them back on the winning track He has pulled them up out of the cellar of the ICAC and has gained the respect of many of the teams in the conference that they cannot take the Eagles lightly The team has been cent from page 1 playing as a foam without each trying tooutshine the other and when they play as a team they win Now I'm not saying that this team is perfect because they experiences can be forgotten are not But they are good! Whatever your individual plans I would like to commend Coach Stubbs on the job that he has done with the transfer process can be managed this team especially when faced with the circumstances given to him Under to your best advantage Just take the his leadership the Golden Eagles have improved with each game time to plan things through and a smooth transfer can be yours (continued from page 6) Spring break (cont from pg 3) Media and Telecommunications specialist Utah State Office of Education the project may be the first of its kind in the nation to bring such added opportunities for excellent teaching and learning to remote rural areas which sometimes experience the impact of economic hardship on the quality of their educational services "A great deal of excitement has been expressed by other high schools in Utah who want to participate" stated Bradshaw "Our next goal is to cross county lines and offer these televised courses to Emery High School The impact of such sharing and expanding of curriculum is not seen as a threat to any teachers" "Studies show that students learn equally as much and enjoy the media of televised classes and that the media delivery process generates a consistently high level of student interest and enjoyment as well as learning" Bradshaw explained The major playground for people And if money is not a problem in the West is Palm Springs Calif then Hawaii may be your place to About 75 miles from tfco beach and in unwind Especially during the a perfect location to get around in spring break when a lot of travel California makes it a perfect agencies have great package deals vacation for the basic college which usually last for a week to ten student Also Mazatlon Mexico is days on the big islands becoming a haven for US and CEU’s theatre and family life Canadian students The food is departments are sponsoring a spring break trip to Hawaii for CEU cheap and the beaches are nice If money is a problem which is for students staff and faculty They a lot of students then St George is a have a few openings if anyone is good place to go during this time interested in joining their Hawaiian-boun- d The weather is very nice and there group are a lot of activities in St George So w hether you stay closer to home such as: golf swimming dancing or travel across the great water just and a lot of beautiful scenery just to make sure you get away because the look around the area spring quarter is only weeks away "The Sound of (cont from pg 6) Music!
