A silvery lyric tenor voice, which carried him from a grimy locomotive cab to the luxurious studio of radio station WJZ, New York, in little more than two years, is possessed by Howard Melaney, internationally famous radio artist, who sang oer KDYL Friday night. Mr. Melaney the country over has made the sobriquet, The Singing Fireman of the Northern Pacific Railway, stand for a thing that is artistic among lovers of songs. A voice, which has rare mellowness and range peculiarly adapted to radio, wTas hidden in the- - rattling ac-coust- ics of a locomotive cab, where Mr. Melaney was employed as a fireman, until its discovery by a song writer. The fireman, on liis usual schedule of duties, was oiling the cups of the engine and sang while he worked. Passengers were attracted toward the locomotive, Melaney intent upon his duties. When lie had finished, there was a lusty encore. That incident marked the beginning of a radio artists career which is unduplicated in America. AT PLAYHOUSE The farewell week of Gladys George, for three years Salt Lakes favorite leading lady, will be featured by the presentation of W. Somerset Maughns great drama of the mysterior orient entitled East of Suez a particularly powerful drama with all of the allurement and mystery of China, the land or the Forbidden City. Miss George, who has been ordered by her physician to take a complete rest and go to a lower altitude or suffer a nervous collapse, has reluctantly acceeded to the orders of the doctor and will bid adieu to her hosts of Salt Lake friends and admirers at each performance of East of Suez during the coming week. Colorful and gorgeous is East of Suez. Its scenes are laid in Pekin, China with all of the glamor and mystery of the far east heightening the inherent charm of a most enthralling story. W. Somerset Maughn, the author, is perhaps the most prolific writer of colorful drama and he is certainly frank in his drawing of the characters in East of Suez. He instills deep rooted traditions of ancient China into the daily lives of the Occidentals of his cast and paints with a masters hand the line of demarkation between the East and West. The Metropolitan Players are particularly successful in the presentation of plays of distinct type and in the cast of East of Suez Gladys George will appear as the half caste girl who has been educated in England and taken on many of the habits of Europe but at the same time retains some century old traditions of her mothers race. Ben Erway will have a powerful characterization, in the role of an attache of the British Legation and the remaining members of the company will do themselves proud in excellently well drawn characterizations which the novelty of the play richly affords. The usual matinees will be given Sunday, Thursday and Saturday and the farewell week of Gladys George will begin with next Sundays matinee. The management reports that with the public announcement of Miss Georges departure exceptional demands have been made upon the box office for seats and that it will be well for patrons to make their selections early. The best seats are available for the earlier performances of the week. the backyard garage. Star. Indianapolis PANTAGES Greta Garbo, the temperamental, is the star of the big picture Wild Orchids. The story of the picture is typical of the kind qf vehicle in which Miss Garbo shines her brightest. It teems with emotion and brilliant acting and builds up to a smashing climax which fairly takes the audience by storm. With Greta Garho in the cast are Nils Astlier, whose success is legion and Lewis Stone, veteran star of the stage and screen. Wild Orchids is without a doubt the best picture in which Greta Garbo has appeared since her advent in the films. Sharing honors as stellar attraction comes the Waites Family, who are billed as A ton and a half of fat and fun-i- n person. This act is composed of five persons, all members of the same family, whose combined weights reach the surprisingly large figure of 2719 pounds and each is a talented performer offering stunts that would be difficult for even the most sylphlike figure to perMetro-Goldwyn-Ma- Telephone poles are to be painted to harmonize with the landscape. That should be easy, considering that the landscape is composed of Akron, yer form. Ross and Costello are a clever pair offering a comedy act entitled All New Stuff and the act surely lives up to its billing. Reo and Rich are another clever pair and their act Oh Operator proves to be one of the features of the bill. The Jimmy Rooney Trio furnish Dance Scandals a fast and furious stepping act which goes over with a bang. Seldon Heaps presides at the organ and W. Curg Peterson and his Pantages Orchestra contribute much to the enjoyment of a most enjoyable program. Manager Grant Pemberton announces that he will entertain as his guest any person who tips the scales at two hundred and fifty pounds or over who cafes to visit any matinee performance. A scale has been placed in the lobby of the theatre in order that weight claims may be proven. The Waites Family will combine witli the management in especially entertaining the heavy weights. Who says nobody loves a fat man? No wonder foreigners have troubk with the American language.
