Show = j S jT LAN 1E MAN M-AN mrecBTrpuLous BOYCOTTER Mr Cannonfis Little Romance and What There Was In It In the Fourteenth ward meeting house Inst Tuesday evening a meetingof the Young Mens Mutual Improvement As sociotion of that ward was held It had been previously intimated that a boycotting boy-cotting resolution would be passed on at this meeting and tho result was a general gene-ral staying at home by the young men and a very smalHgathering at the meeting meet-ing house When the boycotting matter came up Mr George M Cannon the young man who inherited the recorder ship of Salt Lake County arose and delivered i de-livered a speech I in favor of it He apparently ap-parently considered that some very extraordinary ex-traordinary and unusual means were required re-quired to influence the young people in this nonsensical business and therefore proceeded to relatea highly sensational romance purporting to be an account of something that transpired between himself him-self and U prominent member of the Pioneer Building Association who wasalso a member of the DEMOCRAT Company This gentleman Mr Cannon said had called at his office on business and in the course of conversation the matter of Mormons Mor-mons and Gentiles dealing with each other had arose Mr Cannon had said that he would not patronize a Gentile and in the course of an entire year did not expend ex-pend over 2 with outsiders and asked his Gentile caller if that was not right Why certainly it is was the response I do the same thing myself and Mr Cannon proceeded to relate how the DEMOCRAT stockholder went right out and I cursed the dd Mormons all the way up the street The above story was told by Mr Cannon Can-non for the purpose of influencing the vote on the boycotting resolution and possibly of dealing the DEMOCRAT a blow The first object was accomplished for the resolution was passed all but one or two of the small assemblage voting for it A DEMOCRAT reporter upon hearing of I Mr Cannons speech was convinced that the story was either a fabrication or a distortion of facts and proceeded to investigate in-vestigate the matter With a prominent member of the Pioneer Building Association Associa-tion and a stockholder of the DEMOCRAT for a cue he succeeded in unearthing unearth-ing i the whole matter and will give the story to me pUblIC tor tile double purpose of exonerating the DEMOCRAT stockholder and showing what unscrupulous and extraordinary ex-traordinary methods are used to create a bitterness betweenthe young Mormons and their Gentile neighbors The gentleman referred to by Mr Cannon Can-non we will call Mr A and he related the circumstance as follows Mr A called at Mr Cannons office with Mr B a real estate dealer for tile purpose pur-pose of canceling a mortgage What do you think said Mr B Mr A wants me to advertise in the DEMOCRAT I think thats all right replied Cannon Can-non I am glad to hear you say that said Mr ABut A-But I dont waIit you to understand that I endorse the DEMOCRAT explained Mr Cannon But I think an advertisement advertise-ment in the DEMOCRAT would do Mr B more good than the one he has in the Yews A Mormon would be a fool to patronize a Gentile when those of his own church are in the same business I dont suppose I spend more than 2 or 3 during a whole year with outsiders and that is for some little articles that I cant get of Mormons Dont you think that is right Mr A Wouldnt you trade with your friends Certainly I would trade with my friends was the reply but business busi-ness is business and I deal where I can do the best without considering the mans religion I Sometime after leaving the court house Mr A alluded to the subject and said Isnt it outrageous for a man I supported by public money to boast that he never spends a cent with anyone wh is not a member of his church i This circumstance was the foundation upon which Mr Cannon erected his structure I struc-ture of falsehoods and misrepresentations I The necessity for the use of such means to pass a boycotting resolution indicates that the young people are not very enthusiastic en-thusiastic in the movement It may not be out of place to state in this connection that none of the gentlemen I gentle-men who compose the DEMOCRAT Company Com-pany are in the habit of cursing the dd Mormons or any other religious sect j neither would any of them hesitate I to close a business transaction with a Mormon Mor-mon or nonMormon because of his religiOUS I relig-ious Qr non religious belief |
