Show TERRITORIAL NEWS. At 2 a. m. last Thursday Judge Montgomery was awakened, so the Blackfoot Register says, by the sound of silver coin dropping on the floor. He saw a man standing in his room, in the act of going through his pockets. The Judge jumped out of bed and the man was secured. He proved, upon examination, to be the party that went after the freight conductor with an axe the night before with a gang who were bound to have a ride on the train, and were put off. The Judge being the only Justice of the Peace here he was held on the charge of disturbing the peace to appear before the Grand Jury when the charge of burglary will be brought against him. The Ogden Herald has entered on its second volume. The Bear Lake Democrat gives an account of the suicide of a man named Z. Anderson, of St. Charles, on April 2d. He went into the loft of his house, made a noose in a whip lash, tied it to a rafter about 4 feet from the floor, put his head through the noose, and in a kneeling posture strangled. He was soon discovered and the body taken care of. He was insane, and had been for years. Salt Lake Herald of April 30: Mr. F. A. Ireland, recently nominated for Marshal of this Territory, and subsequently confirmed, has been here for some time; but has not, for seasons best known to himself, taken hold of his office. On Saturday, however, he took hold of the duties and assumed the responsibilities of his office. He filed his bond and made the necessary qualifications and is now Marshal of the Territory. From the Southern Utonian we learn that a fatal disease has broken out among the horned stock of Beaver. Mr. Warby has lost four and C. F. Bird two calves during the past week with the malady, which causes death within 24 hours after the first symptoms. As it seems to invariably commence in the hoof it is thought to be what is known as blackleg. Moroni Paxman, son of Bishop Wm. Paxman, of American Fork, met with a serious if not fatal accident on Saturday afternoon. While passing through the toll gate at the mouth of American Fork Canyon, the lever of his wagon broke, caught the bar across the gate, causing the rope attached to break, when the lever came back with great force, striking the young man upon the side of his head and breaking in a portion of his skull. The unfortunate victim was kept at the scene of the accident through the night. Yesterday he was removed upon a litter to his home in American Fork. He is in a very precarious condition. |
