Show October 12 1961 P mu Student money wasted in SC patio construction listened For the past three years USU students have moan constantly administrators patiently as university endurand wail about budget cuts USU students are now as tuition costs ing the state Legislature’s lack of sympathy tuition the largest push near a mark which will be increase in the United States And in the midst of all of this financial worry a question arises How is student money being spent? The answer: sometimes very poorly Most recently $20000 of student money was spent And every penny of building a patio That’s right a patio of the activity fees out came right the construction costs which USU students pay every quarter The mere fact that a patio was built is not any reason to Students worry It was a needed addition to the campus were using the lawn outside of the Student Center’s Briar as a patio anyway and the construction of a permanent more patio both beautified the campus and made the area usable for the students The fact that does cause worry however is that $20000 was used for construction A much simpler (and less expensive) design could have been used in the construction of the patio and it would have served the students and the campus’s appearance just as well It is hard to know who to blame for this blatant waste of student money Many levels of administration at USU chipped in their share on the road to building the $20000 monster which the students now own Campus planners at USU do a good job of keeping USU beautiful but they’ll spend every bit of money you let them Other administrators have the students’ needs at heart but it seems many of them lack perspective when it comes to excessive spending In this case many people just went too far on what should have been a very ordinary project It was a job poorly done Now USU students have it: an elaborate walled and terraced decorative brick patio It is a beauty to look at but in insult to the intelligence when one still has to pay increased tuition costs and listen to the complaining over budget cuts The Utah Statesman simply hopes situations like this don’t happen again in the future and it offers the following advice: To USU administrators quit raising student fees if building luxury patios is what it takes to make sure the money gets spent To student leaders of ASUSU keep a closer eye on student money It’s obviously not being used two-ye- ar as wisely as it should To USU students make sure you use the new patio often After all you have a large investment in it The T Itah Statesman USM 532-64- 0 John Ward editor Catherine Zalk editor Larry Baker faculty adviaer Tht tilth SaSinsaa is written and edited by students of Utah State Univenity Editorial opinions are solely those of the editorial board and those writers with signed articles They do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Utah State University or ASUSU LETTER POLICY: The reserves the right to edit refuse or print any letter Letters that are typewritten and limited to 800 words or leas will receive first consideration Letters must be signed with the author’!
