travel we were obliged to make which differed so with all previous experiences in that mch time we set out it lasmith was with barely enough in our purse to reach the first point cf destination this began as far back as 1932 when we were so near the end of our ur own resources and continued with m ith t water momentum on each trip we wade made to and from our eastern home hom i honch annc h we always rt abased ar ased to keep ep i appointment 11 on time and to lie fie ii n mute E v city or town towi ye we agreed to 1111 n wa was entered and leit lex t at the ex 1 i hour planned for our friends were many in 0 chose ose aas a and every F T we vere ere rec ived with love and ana 1 ee ming appreciation for the effort put pat forth to travel as we were obliged to do sometimes sitting up all night in train or bus because there was so little in our purse to assure greater j comfort or because it was necessary to follow such mode of travel in 1 order to reach another point on schedule time I 1 we may also say that on all trips wo traveled alone and except for the courtesies shown during any period of visit at the various stopover places we ve were forced to limit our self to the most inexpensive ac si and tx er how to make ends meet the trip to tennesee was no exception cep tion and in fact was the most difficult experience of all because of th uncertain condition of our old but trustworthy car which at th that time was much in need of repair all and new tires but we were told to go and we made the usual eaily start on the first lay day of september 1934 and covered the distance to Tenne tennessee isee in the five days to that thai journey on one occasion on the first night out we remained in the car all night because of the uncertain country we found in at the end of the day it was more agreeable to remain out in the great ven cen spaces than to seek shelter ino in one neof of the unclean and poorly equipped houses which were the only avail available abig means mean of shelter in New Mexico in the loci locality lity we arrived at that night as darkness came caine on A visit of a few days with our eastern leader and ad to consult consile with th family in charge of other work at that point and back we came to I 1 this point over the same loute and in in the same same record time arriving here on the of september ready to carry on oil the work where we left 1 off at Al memphis emphis tennessee we picked up a chicago friend who wanted to visit her mother who was established here she having arrived in june jime we may also say that she is one of the few original members who has remained loyal and ciuc the daughter ren a 1 d until I 1 the 10 illiac lon i the year and such form forin of parting is one of the most difficult things we have to contend with since the severance of fam family t ties ies is one that pulls on the heart hcan more inore than tha many ol of the other obstacles we are asked to endure we entered into our fall work with a ze zest st since it also marked the turn of the year in in a new dew way according ord to the instruction we recorded the first of october is our actual turning point and we observe this day each year as our new year al tho it will take long period of time to get this thought over to friends elsewhere we may also say that we have other information concerning a new ca landar arrangement which will vill simplify the weekly schedule of wor working liing days to a considerable degree with our mountain top work completed our folks returned from th the lumber camp during late september the tha family was settled in a two room cabin at the outermost point and the men elsewhere in order to resume their respective duties within this continued on page 4 spec special ia I 1 activities Ac tivit les continued from first page three e mile nica area 1 it would seem that things should I 1 adjust allia t ther themselves nelves with so many blessings to consider as we took into count our health arld and the fact that our needs need were vere supplied in so far as food and shelter was concen ed also the beauty of this place with plenty of sunshine and fresh air and I 1 good water and other improvements which v were ere so much better than we had had during the previous year but human nature is queer and we eald coad not seem to make certain ones understand that we were so blessed or I 1 that we must earn the way to greater conveniences and comforts or to I 1 other promises made so the unrest continued which almost caused Us to lose faith in mankind although our faith in our recorded word was greater than ever for were we not not ibold told that many would come but few would be able to withstand the hardships or to accommodate themselves to conditions which were not to their liking I 1 As we approached the holiday sea i son some of the unhappy ones left t i ind and so sa came release in a w way ay although it wa was s not jot wil some weeks later that the list last tr or the spring ana summer arrivals took their departure and again our numbered were de creased af although though coill some ai of the ori original ginat AJ members were still among the most r faithful of all ja so another alar year pass passed ed and we entered into with work being in other articles carried on as outlined and our own own work nv i ork progressing here nt at the mountain top mining camp and in monticello alterations werft we made on the building we bought for a m meeting place there and it was resolved into a music studio farour chicago friend who has been dol dawg ang such splendid work for us and for our monticello neighbors ever since our newspaper work also demanded a lot of our ti time me and attention since we were obliged to abandon the expected plan which concerned our boise friend and s 1 1 av to ask ash one of our own members to accept the position of manager for the time being f I 1 the experiences of these days might well be added to other unpleasant happenings altho alth as usual we tried to csc see e thoi the good in them and ad to know that everything was for a reason son and purpose altho we ve could n not la understand it all then but so it has proved to be and while we could say many things which would help you how low and why of so much of 0 adverse nature we have had to bear with there is little ito to be gained to recall the unpleasant ries other than that they must be I 1 mentioned as we make note of the experiences and mark the progress s made in spite of them in our next recount we shall hall teil tell of our unusual work which I 1 began in the early days of 1935 and which marked another turning point for us in in a way could riot not understand and are still wondering about aar M M 0 |
