Mr. Monroe noted that the it national 78 vear old cattlemen's association represents approxlmately2G0,000 cattlemen According to Mr. Monroe, the national beef Industry sustained leases of about $5 billion In the past year Cattlemen are getting 35 cents a pound at the auction for cattle which cost 52 cents a pound for the rancher to feed and fatten. Lower and higher retail prices for non-prof- costs for fuel, fertilizer, and feed put the rancher In a cost-prisqueeze ce Mr. Monroe noted that In ' to seeking an explanation Ingtatlon's biggest cause, that federal, state and local taxes Increased a total of 65 between the spring of 1987 and the fall of 1973. No other expense rose as drastically. Overall Inflation for the period was an average 40rr. Higher wages and higher tax brackets were the main source of the high er taxes. Mr. Monroe stated that his association feels that target pricing and subsidy programs are not right for the beef industry. "These programs burden the government and taxpayers with additional costs, he said, noting also that such action would prolong ouradjust ment period and could lead to government productloncontrols and higher direct prices '3 the consumers. "Our association is opposed to government-hel- d grain reserves, said Mr. Monroe, that such reserves In the past were Instrumental In creating the current economic crisis In beef cattle. "We would like to see freer trade opening upoverseas markets In 1975," Mr. Monroe stated.
