Show OUR REVIEW of the past and the future of the american ambric negro by D W cupl culp A M at M D in ill for FOB two hundred and fifty years prior to the final extinction of slavery in this country through the fortunes of war all the leading orthodox theologians throughout the length and the breadth of ou our rland land thundered forth from their pulpits every sunday in flowery and in eloquent language and ana proclaimed to thi the world that god always had b been een and that he always would be in favor of permitting all the africans to remain in a state of servitude but bat immediately after the termination mi nation of hostilities between the north and the south and when it was ascertained that the negro had gained his libe liberty ltv through the fortunes of war alf all of these same orthodox theologians thundered forth from the same pulpits and informed the american people that god in his infinite mercy and wisdom caused abraham lincoln to leap I 1 forth out but of the mist and the dark ness of the pas it were wem for no other purpose than to liberate the negro race from slavery y now it must be perfectly apparent to all honest haneit men be they deaf dumb or blind that our orthodox theologians either deliberately prevaricated pre prior to the commencement men cement of the civil war between the two sections section 5 of our common country or that they have deliberately prevaricated pre since the close of that struggle prom our limited observation we do not believe that the ruler of the universe ever had the s slightest lightest inclination aina cli nation tiou of interfering or even allowing himself to become interested in any manner whatever with the difficulties which existed between the northern rn and the southern people but supposing that the great great C creator reato r of all the worlds did use mr r lincoln as an instrument to carry out his the lores lorda ideas and intentions respecting the final solution of 0 the jda alaverdy y question then it naturally follows that lat god goa himself is di deserving ea i 9 of all the credit of liberating the negroes and riot flot abraham aam liin Im coln n in reviewing the career of mr ariit v x lih A W while mr lincoln was engaged in delivering his first inaugural address he virtually gave expression to the same ideas and sentiments and on all occasions he led the southern people to believe that if they would cease in their effort of trying to destroy the federal government that they would be permitted to retain all their slaves even after the south had withdrawn from the union and was engaged in waging a terrific warfare against the government nir mr lincoln caused generia general john C fremont to be removed from his position as commander in chiet chiei of the department of the missouri for no other reason than that the general was really foolish enough to labor under the impression that god and mr lincoln were both in favor of bringing about the freedom of the negro general hunter also persisted in adhering to the theory that the war was being conducted for no other purpose than to strike the chains and the shackles from the limbs of the negroes and it cannot be denied but that general hunter also fell under the displeasure of president lincoln and he was made to com comprehend P the fact that it was a white mans war and not the negros we firmly believe that up to the present time we have produced sufficient evidence to convince dr cul gulp P and all others that abraham lincoln was opposed to interfering with the institution of slavery but in order to still further fortify our position we shall reproduce horace greeleys greelegs Gree leys letter which he addressed to president lincoln on the day clay of august 1862 it is entitled the prayer of twenty millions it can be found on page 29 volume n H of greeleys greelegs Gree leys great american conflict no truer or greater american has ever trodden upon the sacred soil of our oar forefathers than horace greeley and his sympathies for the human race were as broad as the universe on the face of this wide earth mr president there is not one disinterested determined intelligent champion of the union cause who dc does s not feel that all attempts to put down the rebellion and at the same time uphold its inciting caused cause are am preposterous and futile that the rebellion if crushed out oat tomorrow would be renewed within a year it if slavery were left in full vigor that army officers who remain to this clay devoted to slavery can at best be but halfway half way loyal to the union and that every hour of deference to slavery is an hour added and deepened peril to the union I 1 appeal to testimony the pur in europe it is freely at ai your service jilt not mine ask using the late anti negro riots in the north as they have long used your officers treatment of negroes in the south to convince the slaves that they have nothing to hope from union success that we mean in that ewe case io to sell them into I 1 a bitter bondage to defray the cost of the war let them impress this as a truth on the great mass of their ignorant and credulous bond men J and the union will never neve be restored beverl never we cannot conquer ten millions of people suited in solid phalanx against us ua powerfully aided by northern sympathizers and european allies we must have scouts guides spies cooks teamsters dig diggers ers and choppers from the blacks of the south j whether we allow them to fight for us or not or we shall be baffled and repelled As one of the millions who would gladly have avoided this struggle at any sacrifice but that of principle and honor but who now feel that the triumph of the union is indispensable not only to the existence of our country
