Augustis a great time to night fish for derson said. “Pieces of minnows or suck- ers, night crawlers and shrimpall work well. I have always seemed to do better with fresh bait.” Streamside Utah Lake maybe a bit buggy, but the cat fishing can be as fast as rebaiting your hook. Fishing is best in the deep water near the marinas, off Lincoln Beach and near the Spanish Fork River inlet. Channel catfish range up to 30 pounds. Suspend the bait abouta foot off the bottom if you are looking for the channelcatfish, not the less-desirable bullheads. The Bear Riverin northern Utah is an underused catfishery. Willard Baytraditionally gets a large share of catfish chasers, but this has been a hard year to locate catfish because of low water. The Colorado and Green rivers are loaded with catfish, but the size of these waters can be intimidating. Look for deep side pools away from the main flow of the river. Anglers at Lake Powell who use anchovies on the bottom at night are virtually guaranteed enough fish to feed a houseboat full of people. Gunderson said manyof the state’s small streams remain a good bet for an- gling action. He suggests fly-fishing with terrestrial patterns and using a beadhead dropper at places like Currant Creek, the north fork of the Duchesne, the Strawberry River, Fish Creek below Scofield Reservoir, Big Cottonwood Creek and Sheep Creek, a tributary to Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Yellowstone waters still closed Anglers headed for Yellowstone National Park should be aware that the Madison, Firehole and Gibbonrivers and their tributaries remain closed until water temperatures come down from dangerously high levels, Another option is the Lamar River on the northeast side of the park. Unless it is muddied with rain, the Lamar is an excellent cutthroat fishery. Big attractor patterns like stimulators and Chernobylants wil! bring the big cutts up. Carp killers Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials have given up herding carp in the lower portion ofthe Provo River and are now netting and removing the fish before they become stranded by low water and die. DWAR officials estimate that about 70,000 carp have gathered in the river from Utah Lake. By netting and removing the fish, officials hope to prevent a similar situation to 1992, when 43 tons ofdecaying fish had to be removed by Provo City workers. — Brett Prettyman POOR COP" |
