Ida.), chairman of the Select Senate Committee now probing the operations of U.S. intelligence and security agencies. Kissinger is vigorously opposing any investigation of the KGB on the questionable grounds that it might turn millions of Americans and a majority in Congress against detente. The Church group is against any public airing of the KGB activities since it would involve a number of liberal members of Congress and outside supporters of his current probe of the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Pushing for the investigation of the KGB is a group of conservative lawmakers headed by Senator Barry Goldwater (R. Ariz.). a member of the Church and committee, investigating Representative Larry McDonald (D. Ga.). a hard-lin- e freshman lawmaker. At the heart of the controversy is the suppression by the Rockefeller Commission, which U.S.-Sovi- et anti-Com-mun- conducted ist Ford the Ad- ministration's probe of intelligence and security U.S. operations, of information indicating that the KGB had infiltrated a number of Congressional offices, the Washington press, and at least one government agency. According to Senator Goldwater. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller privately told him that his panel had gathered the information about the KGB infiltration during its investigation of the operations of U.S. intelligence and security agencies. After first telling Goldwater that his panel planned to publish the information, the Vice President later informed him the material was left out of the Commissions report at the request of a high-levAdministration official. While Rockefeller did not identify the person making the request. other reliable White House sources report it was Secretary of State Kissinger. Neither has Church asked Rockefeller for the information his Commission gathered on the KGB's infiltration of Congressional offices or the details of why it has been suppressed. Instead, the liberal Democrat has centered his attention on investigating the surveillance operations of the CIA and FBI involving Americans who were in frequent contact with Soviet agents and diplomats. Since there is little indication that Church has the stomach to probe KGB operations in the U.S.. Representative McDonald plans to seek a investigation in the House.
