His argu-ment was filled with practical demon-stration and was one of the most effect-ive of the campaign. He was followed by Prof. C. E. Allen, of Salt Lake, in a very pertinent re-view of the infamies that had been practiced in the legislature of the ter-ritory by tho Mormon majority, dic-tated to by the tyrants of the church. The fanatic writhed and the opera bouse literally shook with rousing dem-onstrations. The choir then furnished another se-lection, when Judge Powers took the platform and stated he was not aware until a moment ago that he was ex-pected to close. He regarded it as an honor, and be said to the people of the People's party that the only difference between you and us is freedom of ac-tion. It was shown in Salt Lake that the effect of this difference Was most baleful. The impression seems to havd gone abroad tonight that there was a misunderstanding between Governor West and myself as to membership of a club. There is no dif-ference between us, my friends. We stand together arm in arm as solid as a wall. We both believe in clubs, for in their walls the soundest principles of American government are often con-ceived. Judge Powers then proceeded to thank the people among whom the pilgrims had been, for the warm and generous hospitality that bad been ex-tended them. It did not confine itself to the Liberals, but the Mormons had vied with them In extending tho evi-dences ot kindlv feelimr. The sneaker pronounced a beautiful tribute to the natural grandeur of the state. To the Liberals of Provo and in behalf of every pilgrim, the Judge announced that the latch string was out to thorn whenever they visit Salt Lake. An adjournment was bad amidst the fiercest enthusiasm. BELLICERENT IBQARDS. i Cincinnati's Municipal Oflloers Engage In Hostilities. Cincinnati, Nov. 1. One day the chickens got in the garden, scratched them up and ate them. 1 didn't have time Just then to send to town after more pea seed to plant, so I decided to cut the chickens' craws open, take the seed out and plant them. I did that; then I sewed up the craws with a common needle and thread. I never saw a finer crop of English peas than I raised that spring, and I think those chickens were the best I ever tast-ed. For, be it known, the chickens lived and grew to be of good size." Savannah News, Blaine In Philadelphia. Philadelphia, Nov. 1. Secretary Blaine arrived from Washington this afternoon. I Sir Rowland Hill's great discovery of the value of simplicity in vast undertak-ings seems to have produced little im-pression as yet upon those who have the management of our railways. In Paris the directors of the queer little line which runs right round the city Inside the fortifications, and forms a means of communication between all the great termini, have just made a considerable advance in the right direction. For tbe future the fares will be reck-oned by the number of stations one passes in traveling. For the first two stations tbe fare will be twopence; be--- yond these it will be threepence. One bag only to remember that first class is just double the price of the ordinary or second class, and that return ticket are issued for a fare and a half, and one can by looking at a plan see at a glance what !, one has to pay. Why not try some such i plan on the District railway in London. ! London News. j A Remarkable Old Man. H A temarkable feat byk remarlcablo man was lately achieved in this section.
