L MORGAN The lack of a vociferous school spirit at Utah has been a pressing problem for many years Student-body Student officers publications publications heads and school yel yell mas mas every year are brought up against this old condition which I is always new A number of factors combine to create the problem In the first place an essentially solid student- student body organization is dependent upon isolation isolation it it must be all things in itself and not subject to the distri distractions of the general interests interests in in- interests of l life e. e It is for for this reason that a strong and articulate school spirit is quite typical of schools which are at a distance istance from large cities The school is the hub of the smalltown small smalltown smalltown town whereas it is merely a subordinate subordinate subordinate sub sub- ordinate feature of the life of a metropolis The university can only compete to a limited degree against the varied diversions the city of of- 1 fers Another very real and certainly more significant factor is that to the great majority of the student body the university remains a place to study the great and imI important important im im- im- im center of the educational I scheme Students who are serious in their pursuit of the advanced training which will enable them more successfully successfully successfully suc suc- to cope with modern life have little time for the froth which the sideshow school activities activities activities ties exemplify It is debatable whether this latter latter latter lat lat- lat lat- ter viewpoint is not the sounder one The social athletic and other varied extra-curricular extra activities are certainly not an essential part of the college program even though they may fulfill a definite function in university life A s student who is seriously preparing preparing preparing pre pre- paring for a career in medicine for example or in engineering may have honest doubts as to the I J importance of a school election athletic contest If he does n not not come excited about these thin thing things thing's he is inclined to ignore them study who is to say that J h lie lacking in school spirit or in n Ic lob ty Possibly his adherence to to tot educational ideal is much nea neathe n re rethe the true school spirit those those those- s' s de dents ts most clamorously COE CO calf col E too often are the do do and on hangers who have too i me me I time and too little purpose 4 However when the serious seriouS's dents do desert their books a participate in school they would do well to go the v R he way Emotional release of J kind can be valuable in e eve sense I J Perhaps the point can besl bes best made by quoting William Saro f When you laugh laugh like and when you get mad get J Jand and fl cr mad Live while you You'll be dead soon enough J |
